Indoor Free Flight is the Zen of model aviation. The ethereal models are simple and delicate, offering endless options in the quest for performance.
Indoor models are typically very light and fly at slow speeds powered by twisted rubber strips driving a large propeller. It is also possible to fly gliders indoors from rubber catapults. Indoor models are one of the least expensive and simplest ways to get started in aeromodeling, aeronautics, and aerodynamics, and suitable flying sites are available in most locations all year round.
Indoor free flight models are most often flown for endurance where the longest flight (or best two flights in some events) determines the winner. Thus, every detail or extra bit of weight makes a difference. Modelers attempt to convert as much of the potential energy in the wound rubber band into extra time on the stopwatch! This is both a hobby and a puzzle, and it is always an amazing thrill to watch something you built with your own two hands fly on its own.
The minimalist design of indoor models require that every component does just what is required, working in balanced harmony with the rest of the model. Subtle changes affect the flight profile, efficiency in extracting energy from the rubber motor, and ultimately the time on the stopwatch.
Spectators are often surprised to see the amount of control we have over our models. It’s just that the control is pre-programmed into the airplane before it is launched – with minute adjustments and tiny mechanisms. We can even steer the models with poles or helium filled balloons if they are in danger of drifting into obstacles.
The challenge isn’t over once the model is in the air. Feedback from careful observation, and data collected before, during, and after the flight are all used to decide what changes may be made for the next attempt.
Many people fly Indoor purely for the beauty, grace, and enjoyment it provides. Others fly for the challenges of competition or record attempts.
Either way, Indoor is easy to start with simple inexpensive designs and can challenge you as far as you want to take it. Give it a try!
