Burdov F1B front end

Postby MikeRichardson » Sun Jul 08, 2012 7:04 pm

I need help with my Burdov WinStar F1B. The problem I am experiencing is that the DPR prop hub is distorting under a fully wound motor. This was occurring from day one but when I was trimming and learning to launch a DPR model. I was using older rubber that didn’t have as much poop as the newer stuff so the blades stayed feathered, so it was not a problem. Now with newer rubber and the hub locked I can put the blades in the feathered position and everything looks great. BUT when I unlock the hub, move the wire in the “L” slot to the DPR flight position, one of the prop hangers will no longer stay feathered and the other blade is barley on the hub lobe.
I’m dumb founded on this one. I disassembled the front end several times and don’t see anything wrong but then I am far from being an expert on this. Does anyone have any suggestions besides buying a new front end?
I have some excellent before and after close up pictures but naturally the pixel count is too high and I haven’t figured out how to attach them yet. I would be more than happy to email the jpegs to you….like they say, a picture is worth a 1,000 words.

A fellow flier resized one of my photos so I could post a picture...it's nice to know there are people willing to help others that sometime are computer challenged.

UPDATE;

Here's where I am at so far. It was suggested by one of our great North American flier's that if you could rotate the prop hub just a few degrees that would do the trick. Guess what? He was right on! Problem is I can't figure out how to make that happen. I'm guessing the assembly was machined incorrectly in the very beginning.
So another one of our great flier's, located a little further south, suggested what might be a simple fix. Crimp and glue (J&B) Weld) a piece of brass tubing to the locking arm. So far a trial fit shows great promise.

Many thanks to those two Guys....thank you, thank you!

Update: Problem solved?

I believe I have solved the problem of the left blade not staying feathered. As you can see by the picture the easiest solution, at least for me was to build up the arm with some tubing and J&B Weld. So far it appears that this has done the trick. BUT....I have yet launched the model but I have put several fully wound motors to it and all is looking good.
You might also notice that the right blade has also been repaired. It too was showing signs of movement so to be on the save side I built up that arm too.
