2009 SCAT ANNUAL

Once again the SCAT ANNUAL was great & three new AMA records were set!

This year we were blessed with superb flying conditions and moderate temps.

A small front did blow from west late Sat afternoon, but was gone by
dawn Sunday.
The five in A2 flyoffs went SW upwind for the 5 & 7 minute FOs, which Jim
Farmer & Brian VanNest made.
Wake & Power flyers opted to defer their flyoffs til Sunday AM.

The other events on Sat were rushing along with big thermal flights galore.
In fact, Mike['the WC']McKeever decided the day was ripe to try for Tom
Coussens' A2 record, set at '95 SCAT ANNUAL. So Mike took extra flights between rounds and did the FIFTEEN MINUTE MAX! This topped Tom's record.
He then did 121sec in the normal flyoff round for total time of 83:31!
In HLG, Sevak Malkhasyan was beating his own HLG record with 6x120+85!
He is 10[or 11?]yrs old and throws very well, as does his brother Taron.
Tim Batiuk won Open HLG with 9x120+107, with this CD 3 maxes back in 2nd.
Nostalgia Wake was Tom Laird's event, as he did 4 maxes to beat past
winner Wes Funk.

Sunday the F1B FO was held at normal flightline position. unfortunately
the drift was NE and some flights were clocked off behind obstructions.
Flyoffs for A2 & Power were taken out to the SW flightline, which allowed
each flight to be accurately timed to the ground.
BVN beat Jim F in A2, while Gil Morris's folder/flapper took Power.

The Mini events Tiebreaker flights were cancelled due to drift direction,
plus the fact lift might be starting soon. We started normal rounds @ 9AM.
Other events, which did begin @ 8AM, were CLG, Vintage FAI Power and Classic
Towline.
Young Taron M broke the Jr CLG record with 5x120+42 & he also won Classic Towline!
Tim B did 8x120+91 to win Open CLG, with Stan B 2nd.
Dave Parsons loves Vintage FAI...so he did 5x180 to win. Glenn Schneider
damaged his Lucky Lindy before flying an official.
In F1H, 4 of 6 maxed out, in F1J, it was 2 of 3 & F1G had 3 of 9 clean.
I am surprised that the only F1Q flyer was Bernie Crowe, but he maxed out
quite nicely.
The F1G & F1J events were decided by the 2nd FO flts. Mark Belfield pipped
Blake Jensen in Coupe by dint of slower DT descent.
Austin Gunder won F1J when Dave Johannes was clocked off OOS.
F1H was not decided in the 8 minute FO flt! So Brian & Jim Parker will need
to find a time to have it out before 60 days pass.

Mike McKeever[remember him from A2 record note above?]had both of his F1Hs
missing downwind after the 6 & 8 min FOs, so several gents went off to
search them out. But Brian & crew left at 6:01PM, while the posse returned
with BOTH of Mike's gliders at 6:05PM...hence, the nice evening FO we had hoped for was not to be.
Jim made a 6:15PM thermal flight with his A1, saying he was going to send
Brian a joke email saying,'Sorry you left & missed the 10min FO round, so
guess I won then!'

During the awards a warm moment was a photo op with the three happy record setters! Sevak & Taron Malkhasyan at Mike McKeever's side will HAVE to be
a Digest cover shot!

Many thanks to all who gave of their time and efforts to make our annual
event successful.
Hector Diez & Tony Camuto, for trucking equipment from & to storage bin.
Sharron Emery, Tom Laird, Merry Smith for entry & recording duties.
Jack Emery & Jim Parker for Flyoff Directing.
I would have been lost without them!
