Free Flight Friends,
In June this year were some fine Free Flight competitions at our
field in Wawayanda, NY. The first was the Hatschek International Challenge
(previously known as the Skyscraper International Challenge, now renamed in honor of
Bob Hatschek), which was ultimately held June 8-9, 2013 (sanction number
13-1758). The second was the Skyscraper Annual held June 22-23, 2013 (sanction
13-1416).
A highlight of these meets was continued dominance by our young adult
and youth flyers, plus some older flyers newly returned to the sport in recent
years or new to flying at Wawayanda.
At the Skyscraper Annual, the top two spots in F1B and the top four
spots in F1A were by young adult and junior fliers. They achieved excellent
total times (max-out and near max-out) in turbulent and mildly windy conditions that
scared off some of the older fliers. F1B was won by Sarah Radziunas with a
near max-out (only 13 seconds drop on one flight) with Brian Pacelli not far
behind. F1A was won by Timothy Barron with a max out, with Peter Barron second,
junior Joel Yori third and junior Gina Barron fourth, ahead of myself and Bob
Sifleet. Other popular events included F1G, won by Tom Vaccaro, P-30 with seven
contestants, won by Bill Buss, and the All Gas combined, with six
contestant postings, lead by Clark Darling, Al Vollmer, and Arnold Waldner. For
the specifics and for additional event results see the details also below.
An editorial comment: the conditions at the Annual were challenging but
not as windy as some who left thought they would be. For instance,
during Timothy's max out win in F1A, only one flight went past the road at the
middle of the field. Those who flew got a chance to learn which models
were the best thermal performers. In my case, seeing other models
thermal much better than my hybrid airfoil model led me to make three changes to
it (shorter fuselage, 4dm rather than 3.5 dm stab, and thinned the wing
airfoil toward the rear to move the high-point forward -- yes, a
significant surgery). Practice sessions alone had not revealed the
extent of the need for these improvements.
Thermals,
Andrew Barron, on behalf of CDs Alan Abriss and Dave Acton
