60th Midwestern States Championships, 43rd FAI Invitational and 41st Fall Oldtimers Contests Results.  August 23-24, 2003, Muncie, Indiana

The annual tri-contest sponsored by the Chicago Aeronuts had near-perfect Free Flight weather for the weekend.   A cool front had moved through central Indiana on Friday morning before the contest and conditions were quite breezy for those who came early to practice or test fly their models.  However, on Saturday we had a light NE wind in the morning that freshened to about 10 mph mid-day.  The FAI max was dropped from 180 to 150 to make sure that most of the models stayed on the field.   If models were in the air for more than 5 minutes, they were in the bush.  The Oldtimer rubber flyoff max was capped at 4 minutes rather than increasing to 5 and 6 and 7 minutes…..for the same reason.

On Sunday, the weather was even better, but a little warmer than Saturday.  Light drift from the SE gave way to dead calm at times.  Chuck Groth was able to set a new Electric-A record with fifteen 2-minute maxes and he chased on foot for all his flights.   The last four flights were made after the contest ended with Lee Campbell helping to time the record setting effort.

We had only 61 entrants this year in spite of the good weather.  The timing of this contest between two America’s Cup FAI weekends in Geneseo, NY and Ontario, Canada kept a few regulars away.  But the big effect was due to the SAM Champs in OK starting on Monday.  The Oldtimers entries were down because most of our regular contestants were driving South.  Oldtimer entries numbered 24, FAI 31 and AMA 39.  Contestants came from 12 states and made 764 official flights, 43 more flights than last year from 71 contestants, probably because we did not have a thunderstorm come through in the afternoon as in the previous three years.

The high total time in a rubber event was accomplished by David Sechrist flying a Moffett model.  He beat the times of F1B (7 rounds) and Mulvihill even though that event had longer maxes.  The rubber max on Sunday was capped at 5 minutes to avoid lost models and long searches in the corn.

It was encouraging to see 6 Senior-age (less than 19 years) and 5 Junior-age contestants this year.   Last year we had no Seniors at all.  The FAI Jr team selection brought three of the Seniors to the contest and the outcome will have a significant bearing on who will represent the USA in the Jr WCh next year.

The contest director for the Oldtimer/Nostalgia contest was Bob Johnson, ably assisted by Jerry Keith and Lloyd Myers.  They also took care of most of the entry procedures for both days as only 9 entrants were processed on Sunday.   Charlie Sotich again spent both days doing all the hard work of recording and adding scores.  He also made sure that everyone followed the correct registration process starting with checking for AMA membership cards.

Thanks to all who came to enter and fly.  Special thanks to Charlie Sotich for keeping things in order so I could do some flying of my own.  We will do this again next year at about the same time.
