61st  Midwestern States Championships,  42nd  Fall Oldtimers and 44th FAI Invitational Contests.  Results from August 28 – 29, 2004 in Muncie, Indiana.

The Chicago Aeronuts annual weekend bash at the AMA’s International Aeromodeling Center was again blessed by good weather for the contest hours.  However, the regional forecast was quite gloomy and may have kept the numbers to one of the lowest turnouts for several years: 55 contestants including 3 junior-age and 2 seniors from 14 states and one Canadian Province.   A total of 641 official flights were recorded.  The recent Junior World Champion, John T. Lorbiecki, came to fly F1C, F1J and A-gas; setting a new national record of 30 minutes in the latter.   Another notable was Andrew Barron who flew in from a meeting he was at in Prague, Czech Republic to win F1A.

As mentioned above, the contest day weather was about as good as it gets.   The Friday winds were a little too strong for effective testing until about 5 pm when several of us got to bring out our aircraft to see if any bugs had developed.  Even so, the numbers at the field were down quite a few from previous years.  Saturday had winds of 3 –5 mph from the south in the morning that gradually shifted to the WSW at 5 – 10 mph by afternoon. The sky was mostly cloudy and temperatures were warm and humid.  Thunderstorms held off until after the contest flights were over, but made it dicey for the F1B flyoff between Jerry McGlashan and Jim Bradley.  They decided to wait until Sunday morning.

However, the rains came down strongly early Sunday as we woke up and headed to the field.   Jerry declined to fly as he wanted to head back on his 12-hour drive to Ontario, but won the coin toss for the trophy mug.  Jim put up a token flight of 200 seconds before 8 am when the weather had cleared to win F1B.  He said it would have done at least 5 minutes.  It traveled only a few hundred yards.  The winds remained mostly calm, under 5 mph for the remainder of Sunday, changing from the W into the forecasted NNW as the day progressed.  The sky was heavily overcast and light drizzle occurred at times.  Some of the gas models disappeared into the overcast in their climb.  Bob Watson’s Mulvihill model disappeared into the high mist after about 3 min and wsn’t seen again until it had DTd after 6 minutes.  Too bad he was trying for the 5-minute flyoff max.   By 5 pm when were were packing up to leave, the wind had increased to about 10 mph and the drizzle was constant.

The nine F1G contestants had four in the flyoff.   We decided to try to settle that contest with a single flight so the max was set at 5 minutes.  However, no lift seemed to be available during the 10-minute flight window.   Tom Ioerger won his 4th America’s Cup F1G contest with 2:24.  Junior John Shailor was close behind with 2:18 for second place.

This year we expanded the contest to include almost all of the National Cup events.  To help keep down expenses, engraved trophy mugs were awarded only to first place winners.  Even so, three mugs were not awarded:  B-gas, Jr 1/2A-gas, and Sr high point 3rd place.   It is my observation that the National Cup competition does not provide a significant increase in participation.  From the proceeds of the contest, the Aeronuts provide support to the Junior World Championship teams (Outdoor and Indoor) as well as the NFFS Scholarship fund.
