The Chicago Aeronuts sponsored tri-contest weekend at the AMA International Aeromodeling Center brought out 71 contestants from 14 States and three from Ontario, Canada. The total included 6 Junior-age contestants, but no Senior-age kids, due in part to those still not recovered from the Junior World Championships. FAI participation was somewhat down due to the impending Team Selection Finals scheduled for September. However, we welcomed 17 new names to the list of contestants who participated to bring our 5-year list of names to 151. Many of the new names belonged to Free Flighters who were early arrivals for the SAM Championships scheduled for the week following the Aeronuts’ weekend. The usual Friday afternoon contingent of test flyers was cut back by rather breezy conditions, albeit the morning was reported to be excellent for testing. The AMA had just installed electrical hookups at the South end of the field and the collection of motor homes and campers aligned gave the appearance of a large gathering of serious Free Flighters usually seen only in California. Excellent weather for the two-day contest was interrupted on Saturday afternoon by a thunderstorm, the third time in three years that we have been so visited by Nature. The storm arrived just as the Fall Oldtimers was ending at 4pm and had no apparent effect on the outcome. The FAI events were delayed for one hour and that contest was cut short by one round due to expected visibility problems. The Sunday weather was perfect, with light and variable winds mostly from a Northerly direction. Some flyers were concerned that a slight Easterly shift in the wind direction would take their models into the beans near the power lines. They were allowed to extend the flight line to the East border of the field but had to move back later in the day to the contest control location nearer to the center of the property. The F1J flyoff went to a 6-minute max at about 3 pm with Bob Gutai’s model making the 360 and landing in the alfalfa field South of the cemetery. Bob Perkin’s winning Mulvihill flight landed in the bean field at the South end of the AMA property. Because of the good weather a total of 721 official flights were logged for the three contests. Many thanks to Bob Johnson who CDd the Oldtimer contest and to his crew of Ken Tillou and Jerry Keith. Special thanks to Charlie Sotich who kept thing running smoothly and totaled up the championship points. Chuck Markos |
