ParticipantWe’ve been discussing this on the “What’s on your building board forum” under “Satellite 788” but I thought I should put it here because it seems like I was not the only one under the impression that you could use any non-schneurle 15-19 for the 2017 One Design Event at the Nats. But I just re-read the rules and found you are supposed to use a nostalgia legal engine, as follows:
2017: Zingo (AMA or FAI) / Witchhawk 500 (AMA),with any class ‘A’ NFFS Nostalgia legal engine may be used for the Witchhawk and Zingo One-Design models.
Originally I was going to build a Zingo with a Supertigre .15 and then I thought, why don’t I just use my old Witchawk that I built back in the day with a Veco 19BB engine? I am going to have to think of something else, probably an OS .19

ParticipantSimon,
The original rules was written so that only “Non-schneurle .15” were eligible. Apparently some felt that the Witch hawk 500 would be un competitive with a .15 up front, so the rulemakers eventually changed it, so that a “Class A Nostalgia” engine can be used. Most build either design to approx 19-21ozs. and will use a .19, either a Veco .19 Series 100 or O.S. Max .19 for grunt. A Nos .19 turning a 8×4 prop, 18-19K will have more oomph that a Nos .15 turning 7×4, 18.5-20K. This change to NOS engines does even the playing field between the two designs. I had originally planned to build a ,hopefully, lightweight Zingo with a very good S.T. G-15…still thinking of a Zingo but now with a tweaked Veco 19 Series 100 burning 40% fuel.

ParticipantRobert and Simon…Both right…Need to use a Nostalgia legal engine. Not sure what I was thinking??Daa!! I’m not sure I can carve enough weight out of my FAI Zingo…Might have to start over.

ParticipantDenny, gonna be the Zingo with a tweaked Veco 19. I discovered that
sometime in the far distant past I had cut out a set of wing and stab
ribs for a Zingo and still had the plans. So, an easy choice. Also,
while I am sure that the WH 500 is a good design, I was never too partial
to designs with a forward rudder. BTW, a little bit of of trivia…..I
Seem to recall that Jim Clem’s AMA number was the nest number after mine.Rudy

ParticipantWell, I just happen to have a set of Zingo ribs too that Brian Malin at BMJR was kind enough to send me. However, I’m torn. I have a Witchawk that I built a long time ago with a Veco BB .19 and I just need to build a new wing for it and change to a different engine. Well, I should build a new fuselage too as I broke it in half and repaired it with fiberglass a long time ago, and it has a hard tank. So, basically I have a stab and that’s been repaired too. Jim Clem is one of my favorite designers. And I have a feeling everyone is going to build a Zingo, so I’m leaning towards the Witchawk.
