ParticipantWhat is the best way to attach carbon cap strips to ribs? I’ve tried super glue with limited success. Would epoxy or contact cement work better? If so what are the best glues to use?

ParticipantDon’t use contact cement. Epoxy works. Taked time.
I use medium CA. You need to knock the dust off the balsa for better success. The B ship is fixed. I had a lot of caps that needed attention.

ParticipantThanks Dan. I need to rebuild the entire leading edge from the main spar forward.

ParticipantMy leading edge was merely a bit crumpled on the blue side. I pulled it back and wicked some thin CA onto those ribs, then put the sheeting back. Then re-attached the tips. Then went over all the caps. Boy,THAT’S fun. Then re-covered. I have decided that starting the timer when I launch would be way easier.
Good luck and have fun. It is probably easier than a complete re-build.

ParticipantI use CA…..The trick tho is to use fresh thick CA. I put a layer on the rib and then rub it down using my finger. You will get coated with CA doing this, so get ready to do some finger tip peeling.
Also, I have found that after the cap is on, use a popsicle stick with 120 grit sand paper glued on it to sand the cap flush with the rib. It works really easy and gets any misalignment straightened out. I love the pop stick sanding blocks for many things like this. Rigid enough and really cheap!!

ParticipantAnd………….. you get a popsicle. Not the Ted Williams kind, either!

ParticipantWhere do you guys get the CF cap strips. I heard that it comes on a roll. Sounds much easier than stripping off a sheet.

ParticipantMike Woodhouse has rolls:

Just happened to see it the other day.08/24/2007 at 10:52 pm #44651DAN BERRY
ParticipantI just had a sheet of 004 x 4 x something. I just cut it to approximate length and then stripped it with a knife. 004 isn’t available, maybe, so now I have some 005. Haven’t used it yet, but will probably sand it down some.

ParticipantYou can find a nice selection of different sizes at http://www.F1D.Biz
Very uniform and you just snip off what you need.
But I thought luddites were against modern stuff like carbon and electric lights, etc., etc.,etc.08/25/2007 at 2:59 am #44653DAN BERRY
ParticipantI figure, welllll, carbon has been in lamp black a long time. Also pencils and sugar. So anyway, why fight city hall? Oh wait, now I remember why. They are theives who don’t have productive jobs, but that’s for maybe another forum.

ParticipantI love watching Dan shake when he is caught doing a non luddite thing…As far as the strips…I use an X-Acto knife and a heavy steel rule. Lay it on the .003″ thick carbon and cut away. If cutting the carbon against the grain, I use a pair of scissors. If you use the popsicle stick deal (I like Cherry) you don’t have o be real exact. It sands very easily…
Next, Dan will be making D boxes. Then he has gone to the dark side (oh yeah, bunt too!!)

ParticipantThe Marvals have D Boxes! They are made of a naturally occurring cellulose-air composite material.
John, where do you get 003 CF?
By the way, the shaking is from too much Community Coffee, which is still sold in one pound packages.

ParticipantYes!, It is true that Marvals have D boxes.
If you look carefully at Sympo #40 , you will find that Marvin has moved on into a more enlightened view of model design with (gasp!!!) a bunt model. Can it still be called a “Marval” with a straight face.
It is hard to be a true Luddite in this modern age.
And referring to an earlier post, here in Austin we have not only a “City Hall” with an out of control city manager, but also the State Legislaure. Some say the writers of the state constitution (or the printer) got confused when it was published and meant to say the legislature was supposed to meet for two days every 140 years instead of the other way around as they do now.
cheers!!08/25/2007 at 8:58 pm #44657JLorbiecki
ParticipantNot the natural cellulose based materials but that tremendous man made black stuff….I made wood D boxes for years…It was hard to get that pine 2 x 4 cut to size tho…
I think I got the .003″ stuff from CST….I could be wrong, but think that is da place. I know I got some fancy stuff at the junior WC one year from a Russian. Totally different texture to it. Plus, it stripped quite easily. Now I wish I would have gotten more…
And I am glad the shaky stuff is sold in pounds and not kilos or in baggies!!
Plus, bunt is good….
