I purchased a Multiplex charger on the recommendation of the local electric hobby shop. I put one of my new batteries on it tonight for about 1/2 hour and sat there and held it’s hand while I watched a little tv on the old set in my shop.
The battery paperwork says they are shipped at about 50% charge. It is a 480 mah battery. I assume that means to charge at .48 to obtain a 1C rate.
Does this sound right? Looking at the rc web sites, they are talking about using balancers, and discharging these packs to condition them. If I just flew the plane on low power for it’s trimming flights, or high power for short, short runs, would that do the same thing?
Do any of you have a charger that you can recommend?

I should have added that I have read so many horror stories about Lipos that I am definitely leery of them. I don’t want any surprises.

    Dohrm,
I use the Multiplex charger and I think that you would be hard pressed to find a better charger. If you use the Multiplex correctly it will not let you overcharge. Who’s battery are you using? Does it have a charging connector for a balancer? Not many at 480mah do. I like using batteries with balancer connectors. That is one reason for moving away from 1/2 A size models. I would not recomend exceeding the manufacturers suggested charging rate. Their charging rate should be relative to the discharge rate and will be very conservative (liability). My sources tell me to store the batteries between 50 and 75% and don’t worry about it. Lipos are safer than what you drive to work. Speaking of driving we are about to hit the road for Muncie. Electric A on Sunday with the Aeronuts.
