ParticipantI know all you FF flyers are getting for the nat’s and probably don’t have time to check the forum but I’d like to ask if any of you have a Cox Medallion .049SE engine that you’d like to part with. I have just built a new Ramrod 250 with a Medallion on it from the late 60’s and found out that it is not nostalgia legal. If any of you have an SE version that you’d like to sell I’d sure like to purchase it from you!

ParticipantI have bad news, and good news 🙁 🙂
First the bad news, a Medallion SE is not obtainable at any price.
Mainly, because none exist. the (SE) after the listing in the NFFS rulebook, available elsewhere on this website, refers to the term “Special Exemption”. SE engines were produced after the 1957 or 1963 cutoff but comply in every way to period engines and granted eligibility by NFFS
The good news: your engine is just fine. Bolt it on your Ramrod, and enjoy.
Incidently, if you come to the NATS next year and fly it in the One Design competition, you can use a Tee Dee.
Hoo Boy!

ParticipantDean, thanks for the clarification! As I read the NFFS rules I thought the Medallion listed was made sometime in the late 80’s early 90’s and had to have a 4 slit exhaust system. Yes, I plan on going to the Nat’s next year hence building the Ramrod for one design now. And I have a no. of Tee Dees to put on it for the one design competition. I also fly early nostalgia with a Zeek, P30, and HLG. Been away from the sport for the past 38 years and just getting back into it.
Thanks again,

Correct. That is the requirement for a legal Medallion in Nostalgia. The rectangular ported versions are not accepted as they look just the same with a TD piston/cylinder set substituted for the standard one. Slit exhausts are getting scarce as hens teeth now .. still looking to replace one lost a year ago.

ParticipantJim, thanks I was planning on flying it in nostalgia and than in the one design next year. I have a no. of reed valve Cox 049’s with the 4 slot exhaust cylinders. Can you tell me if I can swap out this cylinder for the one on my current Medallion? Has anyone tried this before? And if they have what kind of success did they have.
Again thanks,

ParticipantAll Cox 049 cylinders are interchangeable so a 4 slit cylinder off a reedy will fit. It will probably run about the same as with the rectangular port. The best 4 slit would be off of a Killer Bee, one of the older ones with the yellow needle valve stem. Modifications are restricted to those listed in the rules. Experimenting with the head clearance with shims and shimming the cylinder on the case may help. You are not allowed to use the high compression 1702 heads, but there is no restriction on the use of a Galbreath head with a Nelson plug. Solves the problem of finding the 325 cox plugs and gives a nice boost.Lets see what kind of a discussion that generates! Read the rules. Thermals, Glenn

ParticipantGlen, thanks for the info. I have just obtained another 049 medallion and I am planning on using it for my experimentations. Do you know where or how I can get a Galbreath hd. and a Nelson plug? ❓
Thanks,
Scott

ParticipantDoug’s web site is http://www.the-printer.net/Dookcat.html-10k or google on Doug Galbreath. The heads are $10.00 and the plugs are $ 4.something. They work great on Tee Dees and reedys too if you get to that. Just noticed that he has listed a Nelson head for the Holland Hornet! Thermals, Glenn

Dan Sitter has over a hundred of the dual-slit variety cylinders for sale as “Buy it Now” items on his eBay site. Here’s his writup: (This sale is for a Cox .049 dual by-pass cylinder. It is the latest model with the dual slit exhaust. I have them in excellent to like new condition.)
There are two thin slits on one side, but I don’t know about the other side. You can ask him. dsittercox@aol.com eBay name is coxmania
Don’t know about pistons and rods. Look around his store.

ParticipantI have bought several of these, they are exactly as advertised. Dual sets of slit exhausts, and dual bypass grooves.
They are also in excellent condition. Surely new. 😀
