I believe that the discus glider should be placed as a seperate event at the Nationals in Indiana, but also all around the country.

I would like to see other peoples opinions….[/b]

    Disagree!
Progress comes when somebody finally figures out a better way to do something.
Do we really need another nostalgia event?
Do we really need another event?
Do we really need more rules?
Let the arrows begin to fly.
    Cheers!

    Don’t change nuthin!!!

Discus/tip launch is not difficult to learn–no more than learning how to consistently javelin launch. I saw a heap of tip launchers at KOI. Soon, that will be universal.

Let natural selection take it’s rightful course. We don’t need more rules, or another event.

😀 I also disagree as to a separate event for DLG—it’s just another method of getting ’em in the air. If it saves the aches in my old shoulders and gets them where I want them—so be it. If and when it becomes a true winner consistently then you either join the crowd or continue in your best approach. This is the same thing that entered into the world of athletics when the Shot Put event was suddenly thrown into a controversy with the development of the whirling (similar to discus) throw became the method of choice to the older approach. Likewise with the “Fosbury Flop” in the High Jump replaced the old bicycle straddle approach. It is simply another method for doing the same old thing (launching gliders, putting the shot, high jumping)—leave it be and let it develop. At 77 I am still ready to learn new things—and it saves on the Bengay. JMHO— 8)

    Leave HLG alone.

I do not agree with creating a separate event for just another way to launch them.
As long as it is ‘by hand’ it must remain all the same event.
It still takes lift to do the max, does it not? Absolutely!

Be it tip launch or javelin launch, it is still HLG. One event.

OTHLG will likely retain the heritage of the event, although there are some working on TLG aproaches to old designs.

On that note, I would favor SAM adopting a javelin only approach for OTHLG, as that is the way it was done with those gliders. I think it is important to preserve javelin style in some way, which is the idea of the OT events in my opinion. I know others will disagree.

    To flydean

Discus/tip launch IS difficult to learn– I live on the east coast and I caught on quickly, but I only know a couple of people who throw the hight I do (80-110 feet.) Some only are able to throw 50-80 feet.

It should stay one event. I didn’t think this way a year and half ago. Now I am convinced. Its easy enough to learn.

I miss the pure adrenaline laced, all to the wall javelin launches. That is fun to watch. DLG is just goofy to watch. Kinda like an albatross taking off or landing.

If you’re gonna fool with the rules, jist eliminate the remote control planes.

Thank You all for your opinions and maybe I can get more… I guess there are not many that want the event to be changed.
I just didn’t want the memories of a normal hanlaunch glider to be forgotten. Everyone has to remember there first time building and flying there first handlaunch. Def. a great moment that I will remember.

Yes, definitely remember the HLG [or all] great moments of your life…
Then move on…there might be even better ones around the corner!

Just try to tell Tim Batiuk that these are not the BEST times of his HLG
    career! 😀
Since he shattered the HLG record, he has been in HLG Heaven! 8)

    Ciao,
