Participant๐ฏ Just a simple question—what would be a minimum wingspan in order to try the DL method?

Hi flinger,
As you may recall, this has been discussed with full instructions on this forum and ‘smallflyingarts’ forum site.
Stan Buddenbohm started it by converting normal HLGs to tip launch style. They were in the 22 to 27 inch span range.
Tim Batiuk let me try one he had converted, then I quickly converted two of my Sweepette 22 HLGs to become TLGs.
They were immediately successful, winning the NorCal and TCC contests in windy and turbulent air.
SOOO…look back to about mid-07 forum archives to find Tim’s How-To writeup on converting HLGs to TLGs.
[Note: I use ‘TLG’ not ‘DLG’, since ‘Tip Launch’ is the accurate definition.]Now Good Luck with your converting!

InactiveHi flinger and Lee,
From what I believe so far, the best wings span is going to be from 30-42 inches. I have done well with the 36 and want to go up to 42 and even 48. My height so far with the 36 is average around 90-100.

ParticipantF1AFunflyer,
I don’t disagree that TLG spans of 30 inches plus give better performance, I was merely responding to his query of ‘minimum’ usable span for tip launch.
I now have built a Turn Up 36 inch TLG, and it goes better than the smaller ones did.
That said, optimum span for any given flier needs to be derived thru
personal trial and error, just as has been done for javelin type HLGs
throughout the decades it has been flown.
It will be fun to see what evolves and what design direction they chose.

Participantflinger,
f1afunflyer and I have both made TLG versions of the “Whipper Whiz” that have only a 6″ wingspan. They launch fine, just impossible to find in the air after the launch!01/06/2008 at 8:35 pm #45185Lee Hines
ParticipantYes Dennis,
I do now recall you stating you had 6″ TLGs flying.
And I do know what you mean about them disappearing after launch!
๐ฏ ๐[Aside: Do I know ‘F1AFunflyer’ by name?
send PM with name if you don’t mind]Ciao,
