ParticipantAnyone want to try messing about with the E36 event and trying one with no weight limit? I will call it E36X. The only rule would be to use the same motor and battery combo required now. No wing span, weight, or anything else specified. This is the formula we used on our now defunct E36 event in atlanta. We specified the type of motor and battery and wing span. No other rules. It was very popular.
KISS principle works. Build one over the winter, or modify your existing E36 and let’s see how they fly.
My E36 Sparks is a fine little flier, but it would be ever so much better if it were lighter.
As an event, it is fine for teaching basic skills, soldering, wiring etc. I know I learned a lot. But, I would like more performance at low cost.08/19/2008 at 7:00 pm #46191Dohrman Crawford
ParticipantOops! The defunct event the club was flying when I joined up was called E 30. We used the wingspan of a P30 so it would be easy to convert models.

ParticipantWould you consider just dropping the min. weight and leaving the wing span alone? That way we can all just remove the lead and fly our existing models. Are you proposing this as a Club event? I would drive to Atl. for it.

ParticipantI would be interested in building one as well. I would not be interested in another over weight air[laner with weight limiting performance.
Atlanta is a bit far away but there might be some interest here in Texas.
Maybe an article in the Digest would help. No rules change cycle for this event is there?

ParticipantHmmm, I posted a reply, but it seems to have disappeared. I would go with leaving everything alone but the weight. Building one too light will be self correcting upon the first DT.

ParticipantIs anyone interesred in Flying E36X in Lawrenceville in Oct.? Or is there another option in Atl. I could care less about an official event. We just need participants.

ParticipantIf you have a good field at Lawrenceville, I would go there. Our field is a marginal one if the wind is not just right.
Although most planes did ok, David Mills lost his potent Senator off the field due to a too wide glide circle.
I am planning on going down to the Pensacola contest in Oct, hopefullly they will fly E36, but I kinda doubt it.
I am going to just [for the moment], build another wing and see if I can get some of the weight off. It is a sturdy wing, probably could be a lot lighter.08/20/2008 at 1:54 am #46197Jim Jennings
ParticipantWe went to Lawerenceville last year and had a good time. The field is at a glider port with a lot of room to fly. Bob Mattes is the CD. Chuck Groth, James and I flew electric there last year. We plan to return.

ParticipantWhat’s it gonna be Jim?
A mini Maverick?
Little brother to the super Mav?

ParticipantHay Dorhm! I’m up to an E36X class even if it’s just a club event. But I also think it’ll be a great AMA event also! I support leaving the current E36 rules as they are and just drop the Min. weight.

ParticipantPete,
To answer your question: With the slower climb rate I like an undercambered airfoil on a polyhedral wing. Visualize a 36″ Coupe with a LPS motor , 8 X 4 prop, 400 mah NiMH battery and a carbon fuse. Better yet just look.08/21/2008 at 2:59 am #46201Dohrman Crawford
Participantwhere are you getting the 400 Mah nimh batteries? I was searching on the internet on many battery sites and never could find them.

ParticipantHey Jim, feel free to post some more pix of that beauty.

ParticipantJim,
It looks like that one is sure going to be hard to improve on.
Really , really nice.
Coupe size tech. might be just the ticket.
More specs and more pix please, unless you decide to “armpit” this one.
I may get started on one or something like it,when I get back from Denver.
Cheers!, and thanks for the inspiration. Pete08/21/2008 at 7:05 pm #46204Jim Jennings
ParticipantKan400AAA cells can be found at:
http://www.cheapbatterypacks.com/?sid=1243724&pgid=loosecellsChuck groth has tested them and can give you the tech data. I can tell you that they are a good cell for E36 with any of the GWS motors.
