Those of you who fly Early Nostalgia Gas, what engines do you use?

I have a pretty good Atwood, but I have heard of some screaming Cubs. Bob Mattes’ column in NFFS Digest was of interest. 24 grand from a Cub? 😯 😯 😕

Also, what props do you use? I thought most of the old long stroke engines were best propped with the venerable 6 X 3. 😕

Enquiring minds want to know. Well, mine anyway 😀 😀

Yes I had an OK Cub 049 run 24K on one of the Red Cub props but would strongly urge anyone not to run their engine at this rpm or it will very soon blow the crank or other part. If you have a good Cub, which is in itself a contradiction in terms, you ought to prop it for not more than 19K and keep the nitro at reasonable levels, say 35% max, and use lots of castor oil.

    Thanks Bob,

That is what I thought. You emailed me with a prop recommendation which I followed. It hauls the ZEEK up just fine.

About 2 more flights and the power pattern should be dialed in.

Really unbelievable glide. 5.5 oz. all up weight ready to fly.

    😀 😀 😀

Well in my mind, hopping up NOS engines should be illegal.

Either they are stock NOS engines, or they are something newer.

I never heard a OK Cub run faster than 12,000 rpm.

A good stock early NOS engine is the Atwood Shriek turning at 15,000.

    Dave,

I didn’t think the Shriek was a legal Early engine.

Dean, I think you are correct about the Shreik.
I tend to agree with Dave E. about hopping up the engines.

I have seen the 24k Cub fly. It is some kinda nuts.

I did not think it was either.

    But when the rules said:
Engine Eligibility. Early 1/2A engines are restricted to OK Cub 049 (Original A, B, and X); Atwood and
Holland Wasp; Anderson (Royal Baby Spitfire 049, Spitzy and Spitzy Sr. 045); first K&B Torpedo
049;Wen-Mac 049 equipped with vertical element glow plug.

So I enquired, and the answer I got was ALL Atwoods are OK for early NOS.

Maybe someone sent me the wrong information. There were several Atwood 049 engines, the plain Atwood, the Atwood Cadet with redhead, the Atwood Signature, and the Atwood Shriek.

I thought it was Atwood Wasp only.

So this is the information that I received from Keith Fullmer:

    “regarding: Early 1/2 A Nos
    Dave,

All Atwood engines are legal – Signature, Wasp, Atwood, Cadet, and Shriek. Also the Holland Wasp. My choice is the OK Cub but it is a job to find a good one.
Good luck on the Fubar pop down DT.

    Keith Fulmer

Sorry to be late, I just got back from two weeks vacation. “

I had to go through 2 million emails to find that note. Is Keith wrong?

I cut and pasted this from the NFFS 2007 Nostalgia Rule book, available on this very website

IX. EARLY ½ A NOSTALGIA GAS
Design Eligibility. Any approved Nostalgia design is eligible for Early 1/2A.
    Scaling. Not permitted.

Engine Runs and Flight Maximums. The same as for Standard Nostalgia Gas (above).

Ineligible Engines. OK-Cub reed valves and diesels.

Noting the above, the Atwood Shriek is not mentioned. If Kieth Fulmer interprets this differently, the committee should re-word this paragraph. It only refers to the Atwood Wasp–a much milder engine than the Atwood and the Atwood Shriek–two different engines.

    Heck,

I will just bolt on my Atwood which is better than my Cub

What would be a good model to go with a Cub? I have several Cubs, although I’ve not run them. I have a T-Bird to go with my Holland Hornets (049 & 051), but, as I understand it, the Cubs are much lower power than the Hornets. Does the lower power dicate a different design?

My ZEEK goes really well with a Cub.

Well, it was a sorta Cub. R.I.P.
The Jasco Streak is another goog design for Early 1/2A.

Dean: Is that the “juiced” 24K Cub?

    Dan,
I checked Campbell Custom Kits and Jim O’Reilly’s plans and couldn’t find a Jasco Strato Streak. On the AMA plan site I found the following, but none mentioned Jasco.

Strato Streak 33 in Air Trails 12/41 Garami
Strato Streak 40 in Master Modelcraft Garami
Strato Streak 33 in Cal Aero Model
Strato Streak 45 in American Model Aircraft 12/68 Heeb Strato Streak 25 in By Dick Johnson

Now that I look at these I see the 68 Heeb design is to late to be considered. Do any of the other four match up with the Jasco design?
