    Hi, Jim and others:
Our club is sponsoring F1Q this summer, and a couple of members have raised questions about fire safety. We fly on a grass field, which, in August when our first contest is scheduled, is dry and contains a goodly amount of staw and chaff on the ground. It is a field that lends itself to fire, and since the fields are large, if a fire got started, it would burn up quite a bit before it burns out.
At any rate, the F1Q event with LiPoly batteries are a new concern. What would you suggest the Contest Directors have on hand to deal with a LiPoly fire? What is the likelihood that such a fire might occur?
Our current arrangement is that we have a fire truck and a lot of water on site; however with the LiPoly fire, water is not a suitable control, as I understand it.
    Any help would be appreciated.

I have seen quite a few electric crashes. Never seen a hint of a fire. Just the usual mess and cursing.

Bob, I am pleased to hear that you are adding an electric event to your contest. Although I would not be concerned I would never advise not to use caution. It would be a good idea to have a dry chemical extinguisher on hand. I have never heard of an issue with lipos due to a crash. The only real risk in my opinion is in the charging. Lipo’s can be hazardous if not charged correctly, but most modern chargers are just about fool proof. I would not be overly concerned, most free-flighters are pretty sharp folks. Be sure to get the word out on your contest on the forum.
