This started as another thread (Right Turn, Left Roll) but many of the responses turned up new questions. Therefore, I started a possibly more appropriate thread.

Some questions: What are some of the methods used to determine the optimum prop to use. I am thinking Gas Free Flight for a direct drive engine–no gears.

I measure revs with an optical tach the name of which escapes me. I long ago gave up standing in front of an engine on a test stand. Now I rig up a piece of 1 X 2 or 4 hardwood with a radial mount which I can hold in my right hand just like a fuselage and work the starter just like an airplane. I then measure revs behind the prop.

I never could figure out how to use a hand held electric starter on an engine clamped to a stand without reaching over or standing inline with the prop. Scary. 😯
