RANDALL RYAN
ParticipantNorm Furutani asked me to post some of my engines here. I’ve been not too active in FF lately, but I haven’t been doing nothing. Building engines is something I’ve enjoyed for a long time, so winters over the last few years have seen me making metal chips instead of balsa chips.
First shot is a Mills .75 Replica along with and Indian replica of the same engine. This was built as part of the pilot build for Roger Schroeder who makes a number of casting kits for various engines.
Here are an ED Baby .46cc, that’s an .028 in the states! Center is a Czech Start diesel restoration. Right is an AHC Diesel, these never made production but got as far as castings before AHC killed it, this is one of the original castings and I have 6 more engines in the process of construction now.
Next 2 pix are a Webra Mach I 2.5. The upper shot is the engine complete, the lower is the same engine as I recieved it. I’m really pleased with this one.
Next 2 shots are of 3 PMC Imps I built last winter, all bar stock.
Next 2 are of and ED Hunter restoration, This engine came from along with the Webra above and was one of 3 engines the last being a FROG 2.5 which is still awaiting its facelift and internal re-con.
This is the ED Baby in closer focus.
I was very proud to be invited into the Motorboys a couple years ago, this group of gents from all over the world are some of the finest engine builders there are, and boundless in information. Imagine my surprize when they invited me in! Their (I’d say our, but I had no input to it) engine plan book is available from the AMA gift shop and all the profit stays with AMA.
So, there are some of them, engines built by a rubber flyer.

ParticipantSensational stuff Randy. Real classics, all those engines.

ParticipantRandy,
Nice work!
Can I ask how you repaired the cylinder fins on the Webra ?
Thanks,

ParticipantHi Rey,
I carefully turned off the plier gouges on the lathe and straightened them, then had it anodized.
How are the kids, are they still at it??

ParticipantPlier gouges—-how could they do it? 🙄
It’s a very nice resto. on very nice old engine, and they were good too, but can remember too thirsty for Class A Team Race.
Looks like an ED Racer 2.46 spinner on front of it though, before the ‘fix up.03/09/2007 at 10:46 am #44107Anonymous
InactiveHi Randy
I followed the progress of your engine restorations on the Stuka Stunt Forum and reiterate, nice work. The Mills project would interest a few “Down under” maybe we can get Steve Rothwell (Rothwell 2.5) to run a batch of them instead of Olly Tiger Cubs 😀

Randy,
Thanks for asking. They are, though we haven’t been to a contest since ’05 due to my job. They are really itching to get to the NATS this year, so hope to see you and everyone there. My 7 yr. old will get in the act this year with a Sig Cub. Substituted a rocket tube for the stick fuselage and a P-30 prop on the nose. It’s taken her a while, but she’s getting close.
Thermals,
Rey

ParticipantVery nice work! I can appreciate the machining that goes into an engine….Now, why do they all have that funny lever on the top?I thought those things were only for DieselDan? That fuel smells so funny…Now, 60% nitro…AHHHHHH….
