ParticipantGood day all π
My grandson and I are building Mini Pearls. Mine will be Tee Dee powered for the One Design at Muncie.
However, his will be a replacement for the 80% T-Bird he has been campaigning in 1/2A AMA and Classic Gas for the last two years.
I have, an additional Tee Dee, and an AME and VA Mk-II .049.
Which engine would be suitable for Albert’s Mini Pearl? He can handle a bladder tank as we converted his T-Bird to pressure after Muncie. So suction feed is not a need (haww!! π )

ParticipantHey Dean, The TD is probably the best choice. The VA would be #2 choice. The TD would be less grief and allow it into the one design event.
Remind him this little beastie will be a different animal than he is used to.Al ceratinly seemed to be having a large time at KOI.

ParticipantYeah Dan, he did.
By the way, no one calls him “Al”.
A tradition in his Dad’s family–no nicknames. Everyone uses the full name.
He gets the most kicks from “hanging out”. He struggles in school where the adults think he isn’t too bright, and a discipline problem.
The Free Flight crowd has accepted him as an equal, and he thrives on it. He is a pretty sharp builder too. He does all the woodwork. I do help with the covering and figuring out all the systems. However, he did de-bug the Wing-toss DT on his P-30.
He is very consistent on launches with his Power model. I have seen him in over a hundred contest flights over the past two years, and you can count the blown launches on the fingers of one hand!
He has quite an arm for Hand Launch. When he grows up, Jim Lewis et al better look out!
I have really enjoyed having him with me, and especially enjoy how the rest of the Free Flighters have reached out to him.
BTW, he placed 4th in Jr. National Cup. Was 5th last year.
We will probably run the Tee Dee’s and the others to compare. I have heard the Mini Pearl can be a beast to trim. That is one reason I too will build one–to help the learning curve for both of us.

ParticipantNo more Al.
Now that you mention it, I remember watching him fly HLG at the Nats. Impressive indeed. Actually I think I piggybacked my best flight off of one of his launches. We should have flown earlier in the day.
Good luck withe Mini-Pearl.01/17/2006 at 3:33 am #42886JIM MOSELEY

Way back I’ve flown Mini, Midi and MaxiPearls; all were easy to trim and fly.

ParticipantAny guidance as to structural mods that are in compliance with Nos Gas rules (for One Design)?
Also any tips as to wing/stab incidence, CG, and thrust offsets would be helpful.
Was planning an 80% CG, wing 0 degrees and no thrust offsets. Stab will have a screw adjustment initially set at 2 degrees negative relative to the wing. Slight right rudder tab.
I understand some left thrust might be needed to get the right turn going at the start of the climb.
Does this make any sense to you experienced Pearly fliers.
Also, as to the correct hat to wear, is fake flowers OK and does the price tag have to say anything? (Minnie Pearl) π π π

I look at a little left thrust as beneficial in opening out an initial right turn tendency

ParticipantDitto on the left thrust. Its inportant to help prevent the plane blowing out to the right upon launch. It really comes into play when the wind is up.
I also advocate throwing instead of simply releasing the plane.Keep the wing rigid. You might have problems using plastic covering.
I don’t know if the one design rules allow diagonal ribs.01/19/2006 at 4:05 am #42890Dean McGinnes

I don’t know if the one design rules allow diagonal ribs.It is flown to Nostalgia Rules, so no fair adding diagonals if not on the original design. Since it is not there, they are not allowed. It does allow for a 9 second engine run though.
This might be a good case for tissue over mylar.

ParticipantDan, I plan on trying that. Trying to keep the weight down but stiffness up.
Also, can you give me a bit of an idea of how long (or short) you cut your pen bladders. I now have an assortment.
Length for 1/2A and for .19/.23 for a start.
Send direct to my email if you wish.

ParticipantLength—- about an inch for 1/2A Maybe 1&1/2″ for theAB . The extra doesn’t really hurt. It ALWAYS fills from the same direction and uses the same part. Any extra will simply be there, although I like to eliminate some of the extra to eliminate the possibility of it pinching itself under power.

Dean McGinnesNot sure what I searched for that got me here…but I had to comment on the hat!
Beer (Bill) Chenault used to wear a hat with the old pull tabs from Pearl beer cans all around it! That hat is one of my most vivid childhood memories of model airplanes! I look forward to seeing the flowers though…. I vote yellow roses! Will you, or the plane be wearing it?!

InactiveP.S.
My mom and I never, in all these years, made the association with the other Minnie Pearl! We just always knew it was named after the beer! I think Chenault was already flying it in 1958…which one came first, the plane, or HeeHaw?!

ParticipantMulti-colored flowers, and I will wear the hat at Muncie. Considering hollering “howDEE!” on the launch.
