ParticipantDoes anyone have a set of plans?
I think it was in the Mar-Apr-May issue of AM in 1958?08/18/2009 at 2:17 pm #47662Steve Landy
ParticipantThe article was in the April-May 1960 issue of Flying Models. I don’t have a full size plan but would be happy to make a copy of the magazine plans and article.

ParticipantSteve,
Thanks, I’d appreciate that!! I think you have my address.
Even a JPG or PDF would do.08/20/2009 at 7:27 pm #47664DENNIS PHELAN
ParticipantThank you very much Steve.
The article, plans w/dimensions and full size templates!
I nice winter project.08/21/2009 at 3:38 pm #47665John Whittles
ParticipantDennis,
Can I get a set of plans?
Patterns?
Thanks Dude,
John

ParticipantJohn, I’m in the process of drawing them up in ACAD. If you can wait, there might be laser cut parts as well s full size plans! 😈
It will be as good as the Brilliant and Yeahbut.

ParticipantDenis,
It’ll be better cuz there’s a screechy thing on the noses!!! 😛08/21/2009 at 6:00 pm #47668DENNIS PHELAN
ParticipantBrian, how do you know that?
You wear ear protectors all the time. The fun stuff is after all the screechy noises are over, it’s just a matter of how to get it up so it can glide.

ParticipantOk what ever you say…. 😀

ParticipantThanks Denis, I’m good for now; the in between (instead of) homework project This year is going to be a rambunctious 480. Im in the process of making a path so I can get to the bench now ….

ParticipantA screechy thing on the nose? Sounds like some really bad acne.

Check your spar stock very carefully. The one I had, so many years ago, folded the left wing halfway out toward the tip joint on its way up – dragged by a ST.23

ParticipantJoe seems to have picked the NACA 4409 airfoil for this plane. He either got it as close as he could or modified it slightly by increasing the undercamber and thinning the area where the top sheeting goes. It was tough generating an accurate airfoil for an 8″ chord, measuring to even a hundreth of inch. LOL, I wonder how accurate that Benedek airfoil was that I used on my 1962 Wakefield was!
I can use a straight 4409 or I can use the original foil, which I’ve been able to duplicate in CAD.
Any thoughts?

ParticipantI choose to go with the “real” 4409 airfoil.
The information in the original scanned article is fantastic, yet very confusing at times. The worst item concerns the wings trailing edge, the plan has it drawn to ~.984″ wide and it’s markd quite clearly as 1 1/8″ wide there while the article describes it as 7/8″ wide. Actually, for the airfoils, the 7/8″ is the one that works out thickness wise.
The drawing is complete now except for making wing ribs from the airfoil outline and scaling them for the tips. Notes will be added later.
Wondering what it looks like?
It’s very similar to the John Lenderman design that was on the cover of the latest NFFS Digest, but it has tapered tips[the LE is straight]. -
