InactiveI’m considering using the Killer Bee for 1/2A Nos. Are there suggestions out there for using the engine properly in terms of pressure or not; fuel; prop size, etc? Would the Medallion or Fox be a better choice? Thanks!

InactiveI use a medallion with a “pen-bladder” with good success, and I’ve flown against and lost to Fox engine all in a good days flying. I would suggest either of these as a good choice

ParticipantAs far as props, I would look at either my favorite, the cox grey 6×3 or else an APB 6×2. some may try the smaller APC 5.5×2.5, but it may be too small for the engine. I would also run fuel in the 30% range with possibly a touch of castor oil. Straight synethetic tho may be fine…

ParticipantI use a 5.5×2.5 APC on my Killer bee /Spacer combo.35% fuel. Pen bladder. Use a long screw to hold the prop, The crank/thrust washer joint can break.

InactiveSince my first post, I have talked to a lot of people on various lists and have changed my mind about using the Killer Bee.
Mostly this is because of the issue with glow plugs in that you cant use the stock higher compression head the KB comes with but mostly the supply problem. If I could use the Nelson plug conversion, that would solve my problem.
THe Medallion esentially has the same issue plus you somehow must acquire the correct Medallion. The two that i have are the wrong ones and require changing the ports to the two slit version. Also my eBay purchased examples aren’t very confidence inspiring because of obvious wear. Mint examples are approaching $100 on eBay.
My son has some Holland Hornets plus parts which are tempting especially with the Galbreath Nelson plug conversion. As I understand it they should be held to not more than 19k rpm to preserve the crank.
Finally there is the Fox FAI as now offered by Doug Martin. THis sounds like the most reliable choice with a good supply of plugs and parts. Additionally the performance sounds pretty good at around 18.5-19k Doug reports that the backplate came in four versions and what he uses doesn’t present the problem with “burble” reported elsewhere. He is also considering the use of Doug Galbreath’s backplate. The supply of these engines at the moment is at a 60 day backlog so others must be signing up for this engine after the Joe Wagner article in MA.
Any comments to my analysis would be welcomed.
Thanks for responding to my questions and if i can solve the KB and Medallion glowplug supply issue I might be able to use these engines.
Regards, Randy

InactiveRandy,
I have the same plug on my Medallion today as I have for the 5 years worth of flying with this engine. I use only 35% nitro Sig fuel. I use the APC 5.5×2 prop on it too. I have several back up plugs, but have not used them as of yet…

ParticipantRandy, I think that if you read the NFFS rules, that the Galbreth head and Nelson glow plug would be an accetable replacement. I think it’s para. 6 under nos.legal engines! I use a medallion on my R-rod and it performs very well!

InactiveYou’re right, I keep reading the rules and have missed a few things. So the Medallion can use the Nelson plug conversion but not the KB. It sounds like if I can find a few Cox plugs that they might last longer than I had been lead to believe.
I still think the Fox with a Nelson head would be the best choice.
Thanks everyone……..

InactiveRandy,
I would agree, go with the Fox and Nelson Plug Combo. The ones I’ve seen, go real good…

ParticipantIs there any reason not to take the double slot piston and cylinder off a KB and put it on a medallion case then use a Galbreath head? That way you can make a Medallion into an .051 too. I don’t think there ever was a stock .051 medallion. Any objections? Any thoughts to about using a low compression head#325 drilled for a standard or turbo plug on a KB? We still need a similar solution for the .020’s! Thermals, Glenn
