Does anyone out there know the difference in the internals between the .29X and the regular Max III .29? Has anyone had any experience in modifying the .29X for more performance? Any help is greatly appreciated.

The best course of action would be to send that trashy old 29X to me. I think the X stands for some sort of dead-end reject. I have a nice converted (it was a Zoroasterian, I think) MAX-III .29 in its’ place. 😉

Interesting. I have a 29R – for what purpose was the 29X and how does it differ?

Hmm, never heard of a .29R in the Max III line. If it turns out to be more prestegious my poor little ego will be crushed. BTW, did I mention that I have 2 of these rascals so taking a fling at more heat for one of them doesn’t feel so risky.

I have done a few .35s….The timing is pretty mild in all the early OS series, so that would be one area to look at. I would guess the crank could be opened up to about 55 degrees ATDC closing. Also, getting a good piston/liner fit is always critical (especially with older engines). Then, I would look at liner timing- probably somewhere in the 125 degree range for the intake and 155-160 degrees on the exhaust. Head clearance somewhere in the .007-,010 range- depending on nitro. Open up the intake as much as feasible- I have changed them over to the K&B needle valve assemblies also. Plus, stuff the back plate and possibly the crank.

Then, (and I think it is not allowed, but of it is) I would convert the head over to a Nelson plug.

The crank to case fit should also be looked at and rebushed if too loose.

Normal stuff is to check out the rod. I have been doing some things with eliptical shaped rods which seems to help some (that is the profile of the rod).

They seem to respond pretty well to some mods listed above..Good luck!

    It’s not a MAx 111 variation .. a Max-H Sorry, thought you were comparing something similar to a 29-lll
