    What length should I make a rolled balsa tube for the P30 I am making? What length rubber of what size and how many strands and how many turns? I normally fly F1G, so I am a bit ignorant about P30.

    I’ve only ever built one P30—-to my own design.

    I rolled 1/32″ around a broomstick, and finished it at about 29″ to be under the 30″ with the prop. and noseblock in to be legal.
    Covered it with tissue, and put the rear peg (alum) about 1/2″ in from the rear and used 4 strands of 1/8th rubber (Tan2).

    Most seem to use 6 strands to have lots of power to get them away, or some even use 5.
    Mine does not climb hard but with 2000 turns on it stretch wound in the fuselage the motor runs ‘for ever’ and slowly gets to a reasonable height to max out.
    It has made 3 flyoffs in the past 4 or 5 years, but ended up with a 2nd and a couple of 3rds.

    Thanks Gos.There is a comp on at the week end and the weather forcast is good,so the pressure is on.There is no F1G so I want to fly P30.
    I had a nose assembly from Flitetek and Dave recommended 6 strands of 1/8 so I have rolled a 24″ balsa tube on a 7/8″ broom handle and doped a spiral of tissue around it.The wings,tail and fin are made, so I will spend the next couple of days putting it together.I will make a 29″ tube next week and will try 4 strands when the pressure is off.I like the idea of a long gentle power run if I don’t have wing wiggler, auto rudder, and vit to compensate.
    Your model sounds great.I got beaten in the fly off in F1G last year by a lightweight with highly undercambered section, so my P30 wing is the same.I like experimenting.What does yours weigh? My wing is a bit heavy but the tail and fin are very light and covered in mylar.The fus is 1mm balsa so probably a few grams more than yours.

    It’s a bit overweight at about 45-46 grams, plus 9.5 grams, (by my scale) of rubber.
    My wing is like a Senator wing, but just a rectangle 30in span—-no tapered tips.
    The rib section I made up. Very thin and lots of undercamber.
    Use the same 1/16 x 1/16 spars as per Senator for good turbulation.
    Flat center section with tip dihedral. Stab also a rectangle.
    It glides very slowly and seems to be super stable.
    I use a tip up tail DT to 90 degrees, set off by a silicone timer I made.
    Seems the fly off wing is ‘the go’, but in big lift it’s always come down.
    I’ve not flown it for a couple of years—-got tired of driving 2 hours to a poor field etc. etc. etc.

    Jim,
    P-30 is a fun event. If you go for the four strands then you want the P-30 as close to weight as possible.

    For 6 strand motor I checked my Majestyk and Pirate P-30’s. Length of fuselage is 28.5 in. with the motor peg at 19.5 in. I fly them right/right with a quite a bit of down and right thrust and a trailing edge piece on the right side of the rudder. It is a safe pattern with a wind to around 10 in/oz of torque.
    Dt is a pop off wing that brings it down with authority. i use a fuse to burn through the wing hold down rubber band. Here is the setup:

    I attach the wing to the rear of the fuselage with the smallest swivel I could find using a short line of monofilament fishing line. The other end is attached to the wing tip.

    Just for what it’s worth. We have not been allowed to use fuse DT in OZ for probably over 40 years. Fire risk.

    My model is overweight at 60 grams.I suspect its the wings.I tried to upload a photo but I can’t get it to work.
    2 very nice models.I have no experience of wing DT so have stuck with tail pop up

    Just build some new wings ‘doc’.
    Choose some light wood, cut out the parts, and have them all glued up in a few hours. Cover it with Esaki the next day with one coat of 50/50 dope and thinner. Too easy. 🙂

    Wow! I thought my P30 Canard at 55gms was heavy. I’m glad there are others in the overweight beast category.

    Jim, sorry if you already know this but I know that when I have tried to attach pictures in the past, I did not succeed due to file size. Most web sites have a maximum file attachment size (usually around 100 KB) and a typical digital photo is way above the limits.

    Most photo programs have an editing function that will compress a picture for you. I use the Windows picture viewer and it will compress pictures to a ‘website’ size which is what I used for the previous posted pictures.

    Once again sorry if you know this allready, but I would love to see a picture of your P-30!
