Joe sure was a great guy. Anyone who can eat kippered snacks and Doritos for breakfast can’t be all that bad!

Your right there Bill, I remember him bringing McDonald’s breakfasts to the field and eating them cold about 10:00. He told me, “I can’t eat early in the morning, but by 10:00 I could eat the a** out of a cow!” Only Joe.

I was going through some stuff in the shop the other day and found a piece of board he sent me. He was all excited because he’d finally built a wing jig and he sent me a sample of the wood so I could see it. I also have a stack of his homemade post cards, you know, pictures glued to a piece of cereal box.

I sure miss him, his passing sort of took the wind out of my sails for a while, we flew together allot before he moved south. I’m just now getting back to F/F building and planning on the Nats.

One of my favorite memories of Joe was when I placed second to him at KOI some years ago with my Gollywock. He kept coming over and giving me suggestions to improve my air picking performance. Never stopped encouraging me. A bad prop fold ended my string of maxes. He made the 4-minute flight and stopped. He then came over and helped me get some good flights, ending with the attempt at the 4-minute flight. He got me in really good air, but the prop fold brought the model down in a bit over 3 minutes.

    A really great guy.

Joe was like that. He always talked about the “Hotshots” never considering himself one, but he was a toough competitor for sure. I can still hear him in that “Joe” voice, “Come on Randy, let’s go pick some air!”

Back in the late 70’s and early 80’s, I thought he had a pretty good run in Wake. He won the Nats a couple times and strong showings at the team Finals. You never counted Joe out. Great photo! Can’t wait to get back to Muncie!

Often met Joe at CFB Borden and elsewhere – great guy .. but most vivid memory was after the Indoor World Champs in England in 1976 (Bud Romak won) .. a roaring latenight party in progress in a dormitory … lots of alcohol circulating … talk and laughter in many languages … npise level was excessive. In the midst of it all Joe .. sober.. was snoring gently away on his cot, totally oblivious of it all…..
