After a 17 year hiatus, I am returning to FF flying. How things have changed in 17 years. I walk into a Hobby Shop and don’t recognize much of anything. I am curious about Polyspan and water based finishes. Nelson Hobby Specialties sells an interesting sounding water based finish, but the same finishes can probably be purchased at your favorite Big Box Chinese Import store. Has anyone tried these finishes over Polyspan? Has anyone found a dye that will work with water based finishes? Looking forward to flying again. Regards…

What sort of plane are you planning to use the water based goop on? If you are planning a gassie, then you’ll get goop using the Polysheild. It would seem to be heavy for models.

It is for a 1/2A NOSGAS FF. I hadn’t looked into the weight of the Nelson finishes. I can’t imagine them being heavier than Epoxy.

For 1/2A Nos the water based stuff is a bad idea. It isn’t fuel proof. Dope would be better. For 1/2A the polyspan is a bit heavier than tissue. You could use Ultracote Lite. Its fuel proof and lightweight. Many guys use it. I have no experience with the Nelson covering products. I do have a bit of experience with Nelson engines. They aren’t NosGas legal though.

I know a guy who has epoxy on the surfaces of many planes, including P30. When he gets to fly, he has plenty of success.
