ParticipantAt our last Phoenix Model Airplane Club meeting—this is the group that helps sponser the Southwest Regionals in January that brings people from around the world to compete in the FAI and SAM Champs and the AMA competition, there will NOT be an Electric B competition. Al Lidberg, CD, didn’t even know there was a class called Electric B. I will compete in the FAI portion of the meet in F1Q but after all the talk that goes on in the SEN newsletter about competion this and competition that I’m not overly enthusiastic about spending 7 hours flying in rounds. For some that may be great fun and maybe given time and if my competative juices get flowing again, maybe that’ll be fun, but I doubt it. There were so many of us years ago that we flew any time we could get a timer to time and seemed to have a tremendous good time doing so. I’ve never done rounds and I really can’t see me spending 7 or 8 hours except on special occasions. Maybe the Southwest Regionals and the Arizona Champs in 2 weeks are that occasion. It remains to be seen.
So, I’d like to see us ramp up recognition of the AMA Electric B class where we could fly like we used to. Just my opinion, Ralph

ParticipantOldfreeflighter,
Would you be interested to fly F1Q in a “F1Q-light” format? For example, fly 5 flights by 12 or 1 PM and then proceed to the flyoffs (curtailing the motor runs by 5 second steps). On a windy day, the max can be shortened to 2:30 or even 2 minutes before the contest starts. This will hopefully combine the best features of FAI and NFFS flying.

ParticipantHi Aram,
I read your reply and also your position on including Electric B and F1Q in competitions. Before I read this post I had already copied your proposal to our competition board of the Phoenix Model Airplane Club. I plan on trying to get to as many contests this season as possible, that is if I can keep my models together. I broke both of them on DT yesterday morning at dawn before the contest at the AZ Free Flight Championships doing final tuneups.
Long winded reply but YES I am very interested and will do whatever is neccesary to make this happen. Regards, Ralph

ParticipantOldfreeflighter, your timing on this subject is perfect. Before I read your thread I contacted the Chicago Aeronuts to see if they couldn’t add B electric to there May contest in Muncie. They stated that they already have an electric event “A” electric and stated that they would be willing to change it to B electric if I’d like to. So we will have an electric B event at the Chicago Aeronuts contest in Muncie mid May 2009. I do agree with you that B electric is an up and coming event and should be put on as many contests as possible. There has been alot of activity on the B electric side of things and I expect alot more participation in 2009.

ParticipantHas anyone noticed that AMA Electric B is not on the schedule at the US Freeflight Championships???? I’ve written to the “Powers that be/are” and didn’t even get a response. Isn’t anyone interested in this wonderful class?

ParticipantGot this information off the contest master list on this site:
CD: Ted Firster 951 776-4971 civyboy31@aol.com
There is enough time to contact Mr. Firster and to add the missing electric events.05/09/2009 at 3:40 pm #46691Ralph Hotz
ParticipantAs suggested I’ve emailed Ted Firster and cc’d some of the Electric FF community, both F1Q and AMA Electric B fliers. I think it a shame that a Contest named the US Freeflight Championships is not going to offer and hold this wonderful class.
I know the motor run is rediculously long—-the longest I dare run mine is 15 seconds and that’ll make a max of 3 minutes, much less 2 minutes. All things being up to the contest director I believe we can modify the rules for the situation at the time of the contest. Maybe I’m wrong on this, but I still am not going to run my motor any longer then 15 seconds as I want to be able to find the darn model in time to make the next flight. Regards, Ralph

ParticipantB electric motor runs only drop down to 10 seconds.
At the last Nats, 3 guys made 47 maxes with no drops. @ guys got tired and quit flying.
You sure don’t need more than 15 secs.05/21/2009 at 10:00 pm #46693ARAM SCHLOSBERG
ParticipantOldfreeflighter,
This is the response Ted e-mailed me a few days ago:
“Today at our SCAMPS monthly contest we few all electric classes as a single event and adjusted flight times per the Max. of each evenly,it worked quite well & I intend to do the same thing at the FF Champs, this was the in site I was referring to. I will get a note added to the flyer that is posted on the Lost Hill’s web site. Not perfect but I thing it will work for now.
Ted”Sounds like one bag holds all (sub) electric events. I suppose that if you pledge forego all awards, Ted might be talked into holding E-36/B-electric/F1Q as separate events.

ParticipantThere has been some great movement in the last week. I think that once folks see these electrics fly they’ll realize the opportunities. Electric has been added to a contest at Taft in June and I’m going to go to that with my Maverick and I’m going to outfit a old Buck 600 with a motor and see what that will do. I’ve got radio dt available and I’ll use radio motor control till I get it under control. Then I plan on going to the normal timer. We’ll see how it goes.
I don’t care about awards. I just want to see the Electrics flying at these big meets. We have to start somewhere and it’s begun!!! Regards to all, Ralph

ParticipantAll
You missed a great week end of flying at Seguin for the combined FAI Spring Cup/ 28th Bear Snyder Memorial.
Julie Parker won F1Q.
She used a Steve Spence modified 1/2 A Maverick.
That’s all I remember though there were others flying (no slight intended , I just need to upgrade my memory).Cheers!

ParticipantHi All,
There is a contest at Taft on June 13-14th. Mostly lots of gas stuff, nostalgia, classic, modern, old timer, etc, with a few old time rubber events thrown in. As I was making up the flyer for Rick Keller I added “Open Electric.” I figure the people that show up can make up their own rules, as this isn’t some AAAA AMA meet where we have to follow the rulebook.
Now to build a plane….

ParticipantThanks again for adding electric. We’ll have a ball. I’ll be bringing my Top Notch Maverick Electric with radio DT and motor which is set up for F1Q. I’ll also be bringing a Buck 600 if it makes it through test/trimming flights. It’ll be fun, if nothing else, to see how it flies!!!!! I’ll also be bringing a couple of noise makers, my 1/2 Maverick and my Honey B/A size model. That is if I get to Eloy and trim them beforehand. Grandkids here this past week and I build slowwwwwwwwwww. Regards to all, Ralph
