Having done a few successful 1/2A & 1/4A Free Flight (Always Capitalize) airplanes, I am looking to build something really big, and looking for recommendations.

What is the hot setup for Super D; something .60 plus.

Do you have to buy a rc (never capitalize) engine and convert it?

What sort of prop is used on these things?

Don DeLoach has a Rossi 65. I asked him how he got it. He looked at me with a disdainful glaze and said ” send Rossi a check and they’ll send you an engine”. He did need to get a venturi made.

The Hot set up for Super D seems to be the Nelson .65. No rc stuff it’s set up to be a speed or Free Flight engine. Bill Van der Beek flies a “Buckelite” 1300 [Satellite wing(BMJR), Buck (Joe Foster) fuselage] with one that goes real nice. Paul Stober has one on a 1000+ original called “Strong Arm”. I think they use a 11″ prop. Ear plugs or muffs are definitely in order!

There are many good choices for D engines. Almost all of the “Italian Stallions” (Rossi P65, OPS, Picco and the very rare CMB free flight engine) will be competive with the Nelson DC 65, which can be hard to come by since only 50 were made.

You can adapt the OS marine to aero use and the K&B .67 with a custon piston/liner is a beast.

All the above will be pretty much equal (although the Picco is heavy) if they are set up the same. If you plan to tip the nitro con hard, you may not want to use a Rossi since they tend to distort liners with high-nitro fuels, but at 15% or less, may be the hottest of the lot. I have been developing them with excellent results for D Speed but that class is limited to 10%N.
