My supply of transmitters is gradually getting worn out or broken, sometimes lost. Is Jim Walston still able to supply these, or have you found alternate retrieval systems??

Ideally it would be good to have a combination timer and retrieval system, electronic, that all ran off of the same battery, hopefully a one cell LiPo!

Hopefully someone will chime in with the information, but I read somewhere that there is a business that has agreed to service the Walston equipment and can provide compatible transmitters.

I found this company several years ago. This is the mfg that Walston uses. They make his receivers also. Jim is essentially out of business as far as I am concerned. These transmitters have more options, better range, and work on your receiver freq. Best of all, they are cheaper!

Hello! LL Electronics has been manufacturing Radio Tracking systems for over 35 years and is one of the longest standing companies in the industry. We manufacture many different types of transmitters and receivers.

Our transmitters were originally designed for use on Falcons and therefore have to be very small and lightweight, and additionally very shock resistant in leg mount applications. After being contacted by rocket enthusiasts we realized that this is a great application for these systems.

Our receivers will also work with transmitters that people already own from other manufacturers.. yet our receivers are designed especially for this purpose and can be 100 times more sensitive than scanner type receivers commonly used.

Actually this outfit appears to be the source for the Walston recievers and folding antennas :

Their 3 channel reciever looks exactly like Walston’s, pricing is similar too at $328.
Unfortunately, Wildlife Materials’ website doesn’t show transmitters that looks like Walston’s, maybe L.L. Electronics did make them for Walston.

Gene Smith mentioned the outfit that will work on Walston systems in his column. It was after the Nats last year. Maybe the October issue.
LL transmitters will work for you. They don’t beep quite as fast as Walston’s.

    I heard from Gene Smith.

    Here ya go:

It appears that Jim Walston will no longer be able to sell or service his trackers due to poor health. I just talked with Mike at WMI (Wildlife Materials Inc.), the company that actually produced the Walston transmitters and receivers. They are now selling directly to the modeling community. If you need a new Walston tracker or repair call Mike.

During the 2014 NATS we flew close to a soy bean field. My Walston receiver failed, despite having fresh batteries and pre-checking. Fortunately my F1Q was recovered by Dave Lacy while searching for his. After the Nats I sent the receiver to Wildlife Materials. They told me that they sold Walston his receivers. They replaced an RF tuning coil and a coax cable for the antenna connection. They also said it needed tuning badly. After their repairs the receiver works better than it ever did before. I bought it from Walston more than 10 years ago. It is a model TRX-3S. The Wildlife Materials price for a new one is cheaper than my original cost 10 or more years ago. If your receiver seems to be not as sensitive as it was years ago, get it updated and tuned! It cheaper than losing models!
