ParticipantHigh group! I’m new to the rubber world of flying! I have build two Majestic P-30’s and so far I’m very pleased with there performance. Dead flights anywhere from 1:30-2:30 Minutes. I’m currently using 4 strands of 1/4″ and putting about 700 turns into it. I’m going to try and 6 strands of 1/8″ and see how things go. My question is what kind of life can I expect to get out of a motor before it fails! So far I’ve broke two motors and luckly I haven’t destroyed anything. I’m trying to define MTFB(mean time between failures) so I can predict when to change a motor. Is there any rule of thumb or is there any scientific method.
Thanks,
Scott

Participant1. USE A WINDING TUBE !!!
2. Make up a test motor 10 inches long and wind to destruction. This will get an idea as to turns per inch.
3. USE A WINDING TUBE !!!
4. Make up a simple torque meter. This is even better as it will give you a direct reading as to the internal stress in the rubber. They are easy to make with stuff available almost anywhere.
5. Finally, USE A WINDNG TUBE !!!

ParticipantDean should have mentioned that using a winding tube is a REALLY good idea. If you wind to max turns, 3 flights would be amazing.

ParticipantI get somewhere around a 15″ motor for 10 gms of 1/4″ and maybe 700-750 turns on Tan S.S. Your mileage may vary.
I bet it goes up like a rocket.
How about a poll of what people use for motors?

Cheers!4 strands of 1/8th me. Lazy sort of climb out, but made the flyoff 3 years in a row. 2nd and 2x3rds was the best I could do though.
I do get close to 2000 turns on a 4 strander though and it just runs and runs.

ParticipantI use 6 strands of 1/8″ in my “Tail Firster” at 1000 turns
and 4 strands of 1/8″ in my “Polecat” at 2000 turns.
Use a winding tube.

ParticipantI wouldn’t think a 4 strand 1/4″ motor would work so well with a P30 prop.
6 strands of 1/8″ is what I’ve been using, although I’m looking to some 3/32.06/08/2007 at 2:14 pm #44443George Reinhart
ParticipantI use 8 strands of 3/32 for 1150 turns in my “Pirate” and
6 strands of 3/32 for 2000+ turns in my “long Tiercel” knock-off.
I just got the Pirate flying and it does both climb and glide well so it will probably end up as my heavy weather bird.
The knock off never gets very high but the motor run is like the Energizer Bunny.
Dan, do you still need a Crocket hook for the Tail Firster?

ParticipantWell, thanks for all the responses to my inquiry! I’m waiting on the 1/8″ rubber now. I plan on going to the Thermal Thumbers contest on June 24th to see how I do in competition. I’ll be flying P30 of course, HLG, and 1/2 Nostalgia with a Baby Bee powered ZEEK. Let me know if any of you plan on attending and we can meet. Again thanks for all the info. and help.

ParticipantWell, I received the 1/8″ rubber and put 6 strands into my Majestic and went to the June 24 th contest at Atlanta TTOMA. Maxed out first 2 flights and the third, well the pilot forgot his training and launched down wind and managed a 78 sec round. Placed third of 7 flyers not bad after a 38 year absence from the sport! I am putting in 1000 turns and I am getting approx. 1 min. motor run time. Love this rubber stuff, next rubber model will be a Golywock. What kind of motor do you experienced flyers reccomend in it?

ParticipantOn the Gollywock, I would try 12 to 16 strands of 1/8, depending on your zest for excitement. Better yet, get a copy of the special Gollywock edition of Free Flight Quarterly. It will give you the complete story on the ‘wocks and derivitives as well as a lot of info on motors, props, etc.
Go to http://www.freeflightquarterly.com
You will really enjoy that issue.

ParticipantMy Gollywock gets 12 strands 1/8 -27″ long.
Some guys near Pensacola use 16 strands 1/8 – 30 ” long. They are sponsored by Goodyear and Firestone.Your 6 strand motor should take 1100 turns without much problem.

ParticipantWell, I subscribed to the Freeflight journal. Can’t wait to get my first edition. Looks like alot of good stuff in this journal.
