ParticipantAs many know, one of my “other” hobbies is drag racing. I, along with two other friends, decided to build a nostalgia dragster. It sorta got out of control on the build and ended up with a 526 ci blown and injected on alcohol hemi. The car is a monster and ultimately went 7.20 @ 185 mph. It has more in it but has proven to be quite a handful for the driver. I actually have three drivers, with John the kid being one of them.
Well, the last race we ran was, well the last race. We were going to make one more pass and then throw away the connecting rods as they were old. You know the deal- yeah one more run. The motor didn’t make it thru the burnout and kicked out three rods! It wrecked the block, broke the cam in 3 pieces, destroyed the pan, bent a push rod, and killed six sets of roller lifters. But, everything above the block is OK…
The rear engine car is ours also and John also drives that one. We recently built a new 496 ci big block chevy for it and it has gone as quick as 8.05 @ 167 mph. This is the car that we run when we want to be competitive as it has all the electronics in it as well as air shifting and such.
All this is just for fun- yup, I have a great wife!!

ParticipantJohn, your description of your drag cars brings back memories of my boat racing days in sunny so. Calif. in the late sixties. Las boat my father and I campayned was a 21 ft. Aqua Craft with a 427 singe over head cam Ford! Yes, those of you from that time should remember when Ford developed this engine to compete with the 426 Hemi’s on the NASCAR circut!! This engine produced 590 hp at 6,000 rpm running two large Holy’s on gas. It was blue printed by the Straup brothers of Long Beach Ca. Top clocked speed on water was 146 MPH!! I’m sorry to say that all pics where lost in the varies moves cross country since than!!!! 😳

ParticipantDan, you are thilly….
I do remember the SOHC Ford stuff- Some drag racing guys used them on fuel…
A good friend of mine ran drag boats and he always said that his friends racing them were either dead or going to be dead…..I will stay with seat belts and roll bars…

InactiveI built 700 of these vehicles. Dan Berry can see one on his way to Eureka Springs from Berryville on Hwy 62. Saw it there about 3 weeks ago on the North side of the highway.
It topped out at 70 mph, but got 100 MPG in 1980!

ParticipantWellll, never been to Berryville, and have no plans to do so.
Eureka Springs might happen some day.
Dave, what are those things?I figure if Lena ever gets serious about her aversion to toy planes, I can show her film of drag boats in action. Man oh man, is THAT a dumb sport to get interested in.
