What size battery would be good to use for a starter battery? How many amps?

    Thanks

I think the standard issue is 7 amps gel cel. I got mine from the local hobby shop.

Thanks Dan. I hear where gel cells are on their way out.

    I haven’t heard that.
    It should last 6-7 years.

Your right, they last a long time if looked after by keeping them fully charged and the distilled water added if needed to a wet cell.

Mine is a Yuasa and was with a new Yamaha Jetski I bought in 2001. It came out of the ski 4 or 5 years later and still turns over the Sullivan starter to fire up Rossi’s, Fox, K&B etc.

I’ve been looking at the gel cells in my hobby shop too and they look awfully small. I would like to downsize my starter gear too, however. I’ve been using the battery out of one of my vintage motorcycles — Norton Commando — and it’s a pain switching it back and forth. The other thing about batteries is that you really need two because there are few things worse than being at a contest and having your battery go dead!

You can find 7 amp gel cells on Ebay for use in computer backup units. Often a two-fer is around $35, shipped. Parallel it to your backup and keep it constantly charged.

That’s the same gelcel that I got from a hobby shop for 20clams.
It’s plenty big enough for the NATS if it’s charged.

If it ain’t charged, well, whose fault is that? 😯
