Good day panel of experts! I have a brand new in box Russian Stels 049 engine. According to the attached paper work this engine should achieve 27-30k rpm. Do any of you have any experience with this engine? I’d like to build a 1/2a with it but don’t know whether to us it or a new VA or the tried and true TEE DEE. Thanks for the assistance.

    Hey Scott,

The Stels was made in the early/mid 90’s. Do you have the earlier twin rear exhaust or the more Norvelish’ side exhaust model? Good little engines that of course like to spin small lumber. Pressure is needed of course unless you can make a venturi insert. A friend has one that he uses on a RC speed plane with a carbon fiber tuned pipe that clocks close to 150mph!

Tim, it’s an early model with the twin exhaust ports. As far as props are concerned I have three Cox 5 x 4.5s, is this to much pitch? Pressure, hmm I haven’t used pressure yet, I guess it’s time to learn. Any suggestions for a plane to put it on?

The 5 x 4.5 is too much. Start with the 5.5 x 2 from APC. You need to be on a pressure system. It isn’t so hard to manage and its the only way to get steady engine settings.
    Build a Maverick.

Dan, thanks for the info.! The maverick was one at the top of the list. I’d also thought about the Geodetic Galaxie. I used to fly one in the late sixties with a TEE DEE and it was a screamer. I’ll get a couple 5.5 x 2’s and start breaking in the engine. I’ll get the pressure system from Hank Nystrom, it seems like he has a pretty good pressure system.

    Hank can fix you up.
The Galaxie would work. If you find a kit or have plans. Campbell can get you a full or short kit.
I don’t know from ‘breaking in’ engines.
