ParticipantHello again dear Forum readers,
It has certainly been quiet on the glider front this winter, has it not?
I know, some of you thought the ol’ Leeper had turned in his building permit, but recently with some coersion I have created two, count ’em, TWO new TLGs! π―
They were built using the great Dynamo Hum II kits from Stan B as basic, then I made a Turn Up and Sweepette 36D with the enclosed parts.
Building began Dec 18 and the Turn Up was flying by the 24th. SW36D[drawn up by Randy Reynolds, btw]was just finished and flown today for the first time at our local site, Dog Park, aka Fairview Park in Costa Mesa, CA.
The miraculous occurred, when the setups for each proved to be so identical, that after some handglides to adjust incidence screw, SW36D’s first two launches were spot-on, and further trimming was moot!
I attribute much of the ease of the above to the accurate bodies that Stan makes for his kits.
Of course, following his and Tim Batiuk’s helpful instruction, as well as observing their efforts to design & improve the breed thru copious test flights over the past months, must surely be primary reasons why I was able to advance up the learning curve in such a smooth, quick order.
Now, hopefully, to post some pix to ‘document’ the facts:01/14/2008 at 9:16 am #45203Anonymous
InactiveNice jumper (or should that be sweater ?), Lee.

ParticipantThat’s his lucky sweater… I am certain he’ll be wearing it at the Nats this August!

Yeah CHE & Bill,
Sure, you bet I will [not] be wearing my jumper/sweater at the HOT,
sticky Nats! π
But I will, if you will, on a bet! :P:lol:

ParticipantJust add the sweater as a requirement for flying in Beat The Vart.
Then add a ‘Stench Factor ‘ to the flight time.01/15/2008 at 2:26 am #45207Lee Hines

That may be the answer to preventing anyone from piggybacking you,
cause they might be overcome by the stench, eh? π π π01/15/2008 at 2:28 am #45208Lee Hines

ParticipantHow in the world could someone piggyback in a simultaneous launch event? That would be the ultimate sandbagger, I think.
Stench? Walk through a bog at Palm Bay. Wifey made me bag the clothes and shoes and take them to the truck.

InactiveMr Sweepette,
Sure I’ll bet you to wear that jumper at the British or Scottish Nats.

ParticipantHi all,
Just got back from AZ, where my SW36D flew in its first competition.
I used it to maxout along side Tim Batiuk.
I got better flying it as the day went on and I learned a lot about
how to launch.
Tim won with 4×120+100[about], while I was thrilled to come 2nd,
scoring 3×120+116.
No wonder Tim is the AMA record holder, for he told me he has built
about 60 TLGs since ’06. Now THAT is DEDICATION to the class!!!Now to respond to Chuck Glider’s query on setup and trim.
I must say honestly, I followed what Tim wrote on this Forum some time
ago, about how Stan & he had found to be the best way to go, so far.
I imagine you could go back in archival posts and find Tim’s notes.I do have the advantage to fly with them on a regular basis, so we
do bounce ideas off each other often.
It truly all goes back to the pioneering efforts of Mark Benns[UK]
in ’04 and ’05, which he wrote up and showed to us during his ’05
visit to U.S. for the Kibbie Dome Indoor contest.
Bruce Kimball used the info to such advantage that he won the ’06
U.S. Nats handily with the only proper TLG.
The rest of us were dragging our feet til then.
Mark stated the ‘Y’ tail was the key to it, allowing a climbing left climb,
with rollout to right. The stab MUST be skewed by .06″ for right glide.
Let me say that again, slightly different.
Glue the stab LE at center break, .06″ left of boom center, with
the stab TE is on centerline.
This is in conjunction with the fin being secured to the left side
of boom, under stab.
Stab tilt is almost not used. I have .06″ max on my two TLGs.
So then it follows that the right wing can be slightly heavier and
contains a washin wedge under TE, just outside the tip dihedral joint.
The biggest difference between TLGs & JLGs, other that span, is more
decalage[angle between wing & stab] and forward CG, giving a
VERY forgiving HLG!
Let me now ask a question of you HLG fliers out there:
How many of you have blown a launch with your good flying Javelin
style HLG and had it come right back down?
I think I can safely answer that for ALL OF US!
The answer is:…ALL OF US, of course!
THe thing you will come to realise after you get your TLGs trimmed,
is that even a goofed up launch generally will recover & NOT CRASH!
Isn’t that a kick in the head?
It was Joyful on Monday flying with Tim, Mark Covington, Larry Kruse
and Peter Brocks, all chucking TLGs and putting in flight after flight
all day! AND I bet no ones arms were sore afterward, either.OK, once I get started I find HLG easy to go on about.
One last thing: speak to your AMA rules Committee member and
tell him NOT to vote to limit span of HLG to 1 Meter!
It is never good to stiffle creativity, so Hands off HLG rules, please.THX and Ciao,

InactiveMr Leeper,
“The thing you will come to realise after you get your TLGs trimmed,
is that even a goofed up launch generally will recover & NOT CRASH! “I would like to test that theory. I have never built a DLG (English term), have never thrown one and have a twisted arm after the infamous HLG breakage of 1978. I will see you in a few weeks and would like to sling one of your pups (after suitable Leeper-style tuition of course). Results will be posted here. Up for it ? Want to bet you jumper that I wont crash it ?

InactivePelaero,
“My money is on Leeper”
Good plan except I intend to throw it left handed ………………… I really fancy that jumper.

InactiveYou throw left handed π― well, you gonna have to wait ’till that jumper has pups before you get one π
