I need to clarafy how to use the viscous timers. I see how to rig it up to work. But how do you hold the timer so it won’t start working until you want it to while waiting for lift?

I mount my timers with a 1/64 ply plate under them reinforcing the fuselage. Some holes are drilled at various positions spaced radially around the pivot point. A pull pin in inserted in the hole with a small flag attached. It keeps the spindle from rotating until the pin is pulled out. The holes are arranged to give a variety of DT times.

Look on the Texas Timers website under their how to series. I have a picture of my Mini Pearl with such a timer.

    A really big RED flag.
You can write “remove before flight” on it too.
RED, RED, RED, yes, That’s the color.
    Cheers!

What a good idea. I launched a Senator once with the pin still in it…….My luck was in though. It only caught light lift to get the 180 and was down another minute later.

OK, I located the picture. Go to http://www.texastimers.com then click on Helpful Hints in the links on top of the home page. Scroll down to:

‘Using the MICRO I Timer with the Badge DT Timer in Small Planes”

There are a series of photos showing the timer installation, holes, pull pin, and flag. The flag came from a keychain sold at many airplane gift shops. Lots of airports sell them too.

This flag worked OK at Muncie. At Palm Bay, I went to an actual, full-sized genuine aviation grade “Remove Before Flight” flag. Taller grass at Palm Bay. 🙂
