Hey guys, I’m reworking my Mulvihill because I discovered recently that my current model is way too heavy (200 grams). Right now I’m reworking the front end and I’m curious what size wire any of you might use for a Z-Bar, attached to a 16 strand ¼” motor. On my heavy weight I used 3/32nd and I’m wondering if I can get by with something smaller?

    Stardust,

The prop shown below from my 300 sq in Bienenstein “Challenger” has a 14swg piano wire propshaft and a 16swg balance wire,

The same gauge wires are used on the double blade folder seen on page 2 of the Jossien “Le Vibrant” 8oz Vintage Wakefield PDF available here:

    14g shaft 16g outriggers.

I find any minor weight penalty here is irrelevant because one invariably has to add weight at the nose and to make a real difference to overall model weight (so they tell me), its the rear end that can be seriously addressed.

Rearward spacers, no. of coats of dope, stab/fin wood selection, rear bobbin choice, blah blah blah

This is just me, but I use 3/32(.093″) for my Mulvis and Unlimiteds, and wouldn’t go any smaller then 2mm(.078″). In all honesty there is allot of weight to be saved elsewhere, a few thousanths of wire diameter isn’t going to have much effect.
