2015 Patterson
From: Brian Van Nest

First of all I want to thank my wife Janna Van Nest for the round announcement and the scoring.
This allowed me to fly.
Second a big thanks to Linda Piazza for putting on the BBQ hot dogs, chips, and cookies.
This was a nice flare to add to the fabulous weather.
The weather both days started out in the mid 40,s and got up to the low 70,s.
With low winds and the new northern start line, made for great flyoffs and no moving.

SEN 2074

We published SEN 2074 with Pieter de Boer’s F1C by itself and delayed Aram’s excellent piece on the Eurofly because Pieter’s had some concrete suggestions on F1C rule together with comments from Damjan.

The formatting of Pieter’s articie was unintentionally very unsuitable for publishing in SEN because for some reason the piece contained about 30-40 hidden formatting characters for each visible character. This caused the article to exceed the size permitted by our publishing program.

And the size that some of our reader’s mailers can handle. For this reason we stripped out some of the redundant content. In addition it contained strike out and emphasized characters that some readers would not have been able to read properly.

Eurofly 2015
Eurofly is a bi-annual contest held in Switzerland in the last weekend of October. This year registration was limited to 75 fliers in A and B plus juniors, but not everyone registered flew. The majority of fliers were German speakers and the rest come from all parts of central and Eastern Europe as well as Turkey, Israel and Argentina. The flying site is a large completely flat valley surrounded by a low ridge of hills, some forested, with the majestic snow covered Alps in the background. The valley is used to graze cattle, each fitted with a small bell. They are corralled in the evening and led back in the morning. Grazing plots are surrounded with a live electric wire.

Fliers are assigned to a single fixed post (five in B). The timers, members of a local ski club, rotate one post each round. It’s evident that many have previous timing experiences as the pair timing one of my flights remarked that the motor run was 44 seconds. A, B, C and Q were flown with a five rounds with 4 minutes in the first and last round and 15 minute breaks on Saturday. A half hour lunch break after the third round allowed one to purchase soup, hot dogs and drinks in a barn about a quarter of a mile away. Cars were parked beyond the barn.

The early fall weather is generally calm in that region. But it rained heavily two years ago on the F1A day. This year a low cloud hung over the field on the B and C+P day (Saturday). 7-minute flyoffs in shifts were flown in the evening for C and B. 10 were maxed out in C and four in each shift proceeded to the final flyoff next morning – a reduction of 20%. About 30 fliers maxed out in B and a flyoff in shifts made more sense having a manageable number of models in the air. It was getting late and dark when I flew in the first shift. Only Vegar Nereng made 7 minutes. The second shift was cooler (low 40s F) and almost dark, making flashers essential with only Oleg Kulakovsky maxing. Four in each shift proceeded to the flyoff the next morning.
Sunday was less cloudy and it became sunny after 10 am. The C and B 10-minute flyoffs were flown first, won by Volodymyr Sychov and Oleg Kulakovski respectively. (Sorry, I have not been able to find the results on the internet.) The organizers initially summed each contestant’s total time but then realized that the second flyoff starts from a clean slate. Later, A, Q and the minis were flown. In A about 30 maxed out. The organizers held a single 7-minute flyoff in the calm evening and three young fliers managed finding some support; won by Bertrand Pouzet from France.

Q drew almost 10 fliers from Germany, Italy (2), England (1) and me. My brand new model (235 grams) was based on a B model with an A stab built by Stamov. All other models were much larger and heavier. The only model that climbed straight and bunted was flown by Ron Asmuss, who was also flying A. (He had a helper retrieve the model.) The other Q models used low power motors (some geared down) with long motor runs (35-38 seconds) to climb leisurely to 70-80 meters. The Italians were nice enough to change my batteries as the cars were parked far away. I managed to fly 3 official flights before banging up the model. The 7-minute flyoff was won by Dietrich Sauter against Ron Asmuss. Although fliers had the option of checking or demonstrating that they meet their energy requirement, no one seemed concerned about perusing this issue.
On Saturday evening we had a banquet at a nearby inn. After dinner and drinks everyone was in a good mood. The entertainment was by a lip singing group dressed as nuns and priests. The three low scorers where awarded large cabbages (two showed). But Walt Ghio had the worst luck as his models did not arrive from San Francisco. Oyyh.

Eurofly F1B FO

This year’s Eurofly F1B FO was the first World Cup [outside of Finland?] to have a dual flyoff. There was some confusion amongst the organizers, sportsmen and Facebook followers as to how this should be scored and presented. I believe the results above are correct.

I asked Ian Kaynes about this and he says that the FFTSC will issue a clarification to avoid confusion in future events.
