The decision to move the SCAT annual one week forward looked to be the right decision in that the Grapevine did have snow on Friday and Saturday but I don’t think it was shut down. Brian VanNest was at Lost Hills on the original scheduled date and reported it was very windy that Saturday morning but calmed enough to do some nice LDA F1A flying. The next morning was great flying conditions for Brian. I do understand the date change prevented the three Goldstein F1A flyers from attending but it did allow Ron Felix to come out from the east coast.

The contest started on Saturday with beautiful Lost Hills flying weather although the thermals were tricky. Enes was the only max out in F1A. Only two max outs in F1B: Ron Felix and Walt Ghio with an honorable mention to Ittai Kohavi who dropped only 2 seconds and Jerry Fitch who dropped 8 seconds. Both Walt and Ron maxed the 6 minute flyoff flight. On the 8 minute flyoff flight, Walt DT’d early to stay out of the trees doing 308 seconds. He had an engagement and had to leave Saturday. Ron let his model fly and was just short of 6 minutes and into the trees. He easily found the model with GPS but dark was closing in. He and Doc Schneider got the model on Sunday morning and I believe in good conditions. Guy Menanno was the only F1C flyer, trimming a folder and doing 5 maxes.  Jim Kelly won F1P.

Oh how Lost Hills can change its demeanor! Cold and windy from the west. I cancelled the mini-event tiebreaker rounds and then moved the line to the west. By 10 am it had warmed up and calmed down. We got 3 rounds completed and the wind shifted 180 degrees so back to the central flight area. No max outs. Brian VanNest won F1S dropping only 4 seconds. I was the only F1H flyer and dropped 19 seconds. F1G was looking like a fly off with Jerry Fitch and Mike Richardson both maxed through 4 rounds. Jerry flew first and got caught in a wind gust and dropped 12 seconds. Mike waited for some time for better conditions. When he did launch the model looked OK but an early DT ended a possible exciting ending.

We had a few AMA- Nostalgia flyers, David and Justin Martin from the Fresno club fly gas, Art Chmielewski with a beautiful P30 and our own special Lee Hines flying E36.

The wind was increasing so a quick awards presentation was done and like that Lost Hill flying site had only 3 RVs staying over a windy Sunday night. Of course Monday morning had perfect weather which I used to test out a turbulation idea on a glider.
