AmCup scores and report, Aug 18,2022

Great competition flying in the first 60% of this 2022 AmCup season—18 of 30 contests complete. Overall, there are more entrants, but five events have zero or only one bonus point contest. This even with the new 2022-point allocation scheme that starts bonus points at 5 flyers (was 6 flyers). The separation between position looks closer with the new scoring system of increments now of 2 points opposed to the old 5 points. Now points are given 1st through 5th: 25,23,21,19,17 points plus any bonus points.

The F1A flyers can all fold their hands, Jama has an impressive 19-point lead, his 4 scores all have bonus points, two are 30 pointers. I am in second and will keep flying but a miracle is needed for anyone to overcome Jama.

Not as commanding as Jama’s lead, in F1B Alex Andriukov has a strong 9 point lead with 4 wins, two with bonus points. The flyers below him only have 1 or 2 wins.

In F1C, it looks like Faust Parker will be the only flyer that will meet the 3 flying site rule. Nevertheless, he has 100 points.

In F1P will we get another Mike Fedor vs Bob Hanford shoot out? At the 2021 AZ Champs these two went at it, Bob had a mechanical / set-up problem on his first flight and Mike won the contest and AmCup. Currently these are the only guys meeting the 3 site rule. The group of west coast flyers have spread the wins out between themselves. They also need to meet the 3 flying site rule so unless they burn some gas, (for example, Tangent, OR two AmCup contests this weekend) they do not look to challenge the TX-OK flyers.

Oh boy— better, Oh girl. What a Lost Hills October we will have in F1G. Tiff O’Dell is in the lead with Geralyn Jones close behind with Peter Brocks and Jerry Fitch in striking position. The Columbine and Centennial Denver contests resulted in two ties in F1G with the first 3 mentioned above in them. AmCup approved the tie breaker to be held at Lost Hills in October.

If not for Blake Jensen in F1H, the event would be lacking any luster. Blake has won 5 contests already and will likely add to that at Tangent this weekend. I had hoped as in previous NATs there would be at least one bonus point and that I would win. I did win but no bonus points. Where did all the Top Kicks go? So sadly, F1H has become an event where most contests are solo flyers getting their 25 point wins. Now to Blakes credit, he and I went head-to-head at 3 contests, and he beat me all 3 times. Mike Fedor, 2021 F1H winner is in 3rd.

Substitute Faust Parker for Blake and the F1J story is the same as F1H. Only 3 contests to date with three flyers. the rest had only 1 or 2 entrants, i.e., no bonus points. At this rate Faust will be the only one to meet the 3 flying site rule.

Big “Electric’, F1Q is a bit better than F1H and J but no bonus points (I.e., no contests with 5 or more competitors). There are 4 flyers meeting the 3 site rule. Julie Parker holds a 2 point lead over Jack Murphy. Bob Sifleet and Ben Tarcher (2021 winner) are in striking distance, Both Bob and Ben need a third flying site.

Little “Electric”, F1S. Now we have some life! Here Jack and Julie are flipped, Jack is in the lead by 6 points over Julie. Both have bonus points, but Jack has more wins. Will October Lost Hills set up another end of the year AZ Champs shoot out in F1S?

Now to the top of the hills, F1E. Another Denver-created situation will make for an interesting Lost Hills in October. The F1E USA team was decided at the Denver Finals, Tom Ioerger, Peter Brocks, Gerlyn Jones and Bob Sifleet (only 4 entrants). This was also the Centennial Cup. Only 3 rounds were completed before a total blow out. While this was sufficient for the Team selection with the understanding that the F1E team has the option to send 4 team members since one of the team is female (yay Geralyn!). Anyway, SCAT discussed and decided to stick with the 4 round minimum needed for a valid contest. Therefore, it was agreed that the contest will be completed at Lost Hills in Oct. Plenty of Lost Hills action in October. Oh yea, there’s the USA Team Finals too!

Editorial: While reviewing the NFFs competition calendar and the current AmCup calendar, it became apparent that over the last several years we have lost more contests than have been added. The rules cap the number of contests at 34, we are below that at 30. With 9 AmCup contests at Lost Hills, more there is not needed. Jack Murphy has the newest AmCup contest, the Casino Cup in UT. It is struggling with low attendance due to traveling distance for most, but it does give one more option to meet the 3 flying site requirement. My one observation on the Muncie and Wayawanda reduction of AmCup contests is the lack of CDs willing to run contests. Time for some new CD’s to step-up.

Thanks to all the clubs and CD’s that run our contests, without them we’d all be “fun flyers”.
It is too early to know if we’ll be returning to the Lost Hills Recreation center in February 2023 for the 2022 AmCup banquet. I’d like to do that, but the county Rec Center rules will dictate. The 2021 award ceremony on the Lost Hills field this past February worked out, we had good weather and all who attended enjoyed— and the price was right—SCAT paid for snacks from Gabby’s.
As always, send corrections via email.
