Dates

August 11 to 18, 1985

Location

Livno, Yugoslavia

Accommodation

Too spread out. Some competitors had to travel 80 km on a mountain road to reach the field. Centralised lodgings is a necessity for a fair Championship. The camping site was inadequate, certainly not value for money. Catering was generally satisfactory.

Flying site

The Livno field is excellent for FF, certainly one of the best anywhere.

Weather

Very stable, hot days, little wind and no rain. Perfect for FF.

Competition

Flying was excellent, with a large proportion of the entry in each category qualifying for the fly-off in the good weather prevailing. Winning performances superb in each category.

Timekeeping

Timekeeping is an area where the Jury unanimously feels there is need for improvement. At Livno, the Jury was not informed about the timekeepers briefing, which left several questions to be sorted out in the field during the contest. Some of the long fly-off flights caused problems for the timekeepers, and probably some wrong decisions. The Jury strongly feels that timekeepers from different countries would improve the situation.

Protests

There was one official protest at this contest.

Observations

The Championship were organised by the Yugoslav Aero Club. Stronger control over the local Club responsible for arrangements at Livno would have improved this meeting. The PA system was poorly equipped and poorly run. Adequate information to competitors and spectators is a must for a good World Championship.

Conclusion

The responsible Aero Club must at all times have strict control of whatever body responsible for on-site organisation. In view of pre—contest difficulties concerning entry fees etc. at this Championship, communication between organiser and CIAM is vital. Rules should be formally defined and adopted by C.I.A.M. One of the largest ever, this was a most successful championships surely to be remembered for the top weather, flying and field
