Dates
September 20-26 1994
Location
Slanic, Romania
information
3 bulletins were issued and contained full information. It is notable that some countries did not reply to the organisers after returning the preliminary entry forms. Some brought final entry and fees to the championships, while one made no further communication and did not participate. These actions are inconvenient for the organisers.
Accommodation
During August the organisers decided that the intended hotel in Slanic had fallen below standard and instead they arranged the use of a hotel in Ploiesti. The rooms and food in this hotel were generally good. The location required a 35km (more than one hour) bus journey to and from the flying site.
Flying site
The salt mine is a well-known unique indoor flying site. This year a larger area was reserved for official flying, while still allowing a separate practice area. flying conditions were good, except that increased drift was noticeable on the final day. Lift access to the mine was efficiently handled. The basic underground toilet facilities deteriorated with use.
Contest organisation
The competition was run smoothly over 3 days with 2 rounds of 3 hours on each day. The senior and junior championships ran concurrently, which tends to reduce attention on the junior event. Timekeepers were well trained, competent and polite, giving no problems despite the difficult lighting conditions. All foreign timekeepers who applied were used. Scoreboard display of scores was limited, and the planned computer output was not possible due to an unforeseen drop in electricity voltage.
Competition
In the senior championship there were 37 competitors from 13 countries and in junior 12 competitors from 6 countries. Contestants and team managers behaved sportingly and there were no protests. Good performances were recorded, with the highest time of 44 minutes clearly exceeding the previous Slanic site record of 39 minutes.
Opening and Closing Ceremonies and Prizegiving
Efficient, short and impressive opening and closing ceremonies were held in Ploiesti. In addition to the FAI awards, the organisers supplied and presented a considerable number of fine cups, medals and diploma to many other competitors – most significantly including medals and diploma for all the members of the top three teams in both events.
Conclusion
The jury wish to thank the Romanian Modelling Federation for an efficient and successful championships.
