Information

Two bulletins were sent out to NACs before the event in time and additional information were issued on the spot at arrival and contained the necessary information. One meeting was organized for the team managers, the main officials and the jury on the training day, after the opening ceremony. It was short and effective including the important topic, how the teams will be informed each morning about the contest area to be used, as some distance exists between the areas usable at different wind directions. The teams also have got the CD instruction that all helpers and team managers should stay behind a line established behind the timekeepers to leave them timing undisturbed.

Participation

The final entry was a total of 34 senior competitors from 11 countries (all full teams) and 24 juniors from 8 countries (all full teams). This entry was about at the usual level, slightly over the previous European Championships. The registration and model processing was at Tomciansky Dvor in Tomcany, just besides Martin on the training day.

Accommodation

Accommodation was organised in different versions. The Pension U Martina for a part of the jury, some officials and some teams was good. We haven’t heard about any major problems. The food in the hotel and at the contest site was good and plentiful.

Flying site

Four sites were available around Martin, the actual slope to be selected each morning according to the wind direction in a short meeting at Tomciansky Dvor. The flying area was the same (site 1) during the championships. All sites are of world class quality.

Weather

In general, the wind was low, except in the 5th and 1th fly-off rounds on the senior day, and the direction was not stable, strongly influenced by the thermal activity.

Competition

Junior day, August 27, slope No.1: low wind (0.5-3.5 m/s), mainly N direction, except in the 5th round, when changed to NW, all day sunny.

The maximum flying times were 4, 5, 5, 5 and 5 minutes, round times were scheduled for 50 minutes with 15 minutes breaks and 60 minutes lunch break after round 3. The starting line was the same in round 1 to round 4. The respective number of round by round full houses were 23, 20, 19 and 19 (from the 24 competitors), thanks to the good weather. Therefore, for the fifth round the line was moved downwards in a 25 min. long break.

Finally, no one has flown maximum in the fifth round, but only 2 and 5 seconds were missing from the two best flights, this way there was no fly-off.

The individual winner was Dorobantu Hariton (ROM) with just three second before Neumann Christian (GER). The team winner was Romania before Germany and France.

Senior day, August 28: low wind (1-2 m/s), mainly NW direction, except in the 5th round and 1th fly-off round when changed to N (4-7 m/s). The sky was all day sunny.

It was harder to fly maxes than on the junior day.

The maximum flying times was 5 minutes in all rounds, round times were scheduled for 60 minutes with 15 minutes breaks and 60 minutes lunch break after round 3. The starting line was the same in round 1 to round 3. The respective number of round by round full houses were 25, 21 and 15 (from the 34 competitors). Therefore, for the 4th and 5th round the line was moved downwards in an additional 20 min. break. A total of 6 competitors had full house after the fifth round.

For the fly-offs the line was moved further down. Three of the six competitors maxed out in the 7 min. round in the rather good wind. In the second fly-off only one competitor maxed in the dropping wind.

The individual winner was Berto Giuseppe (ITA), who has flown an unbelievable 9 min. max as his model was slowly drifted to the right along several slopes of the hills, while the second best flight time was only 121 seconds. The team title was going to Romania with a very slight margin of 1,43 % before the Italian team.

Timekeeping

Opening and Closing Ceremony

The opening ceremony was organized on the training day evening after the registration and model processing at Tomcansky Dvor. This arrangement pleased the participants but this way it had no publicity in the home town Martin. After greeting the participating countries short speeches were held by the chief organizer and the jury president who also opened the championship.

The prize giving ceremony, the closing ceremony and the banquet were organized after each other in the evening of the reserve day again at Tomcansky Dvor.

During both ceremonies the FAI and the Slovakian anthems were played.

The “Europa F1E Pokal” senior individual CIAM trophy was handed over to Berto Giuseppe (ITA) and the junior individual “Rhön-Pokal” trophy to Dorobantu Hariton (Romania).

Both trophies are in good conditions.

Protests

The jury had no protest to handle.

Observations

Conclusions

The 2018 European Championship in class F1E was a successful event for the seniors and juniors as well. Thanks and congratulations to the local organizing staff and the timekeepers, local ones and from abroad. The experienced contest director, Juraj Mizigar, did good job, he was powerful enough to keep the contest well in hands.

The organisers, prepared for the champs by Jakub Drmla, used the experience they have collected through the previous local events, world cup contests and Cat.1 championships, some smaller problems were solved soon.

Thanks to them for the work and efforts made for the F1E modelling community. On behalf of the FAI Jury
