25 August – 1 September 2007

Location

Turda, Romania

Participation

36 competitors from 12 countries flew in the Senior Championships.

24 competitors from 10 countries flew in the Junior Championships. I would particularly like to mention the satisfyingly large number of male and female junior competitors, promising a healthy future for this free flight category.

Accommodation

The competition venue was approximately 10 minutes drive from the nearby motel. Breakfast and evening meal were provided at the motel and lunch was served on the airfield.

Opening and closing ceremonies

The opening of the World Championships was a splendid festive event in Turda’s city centre. There was a lovely contribution from a folk music and dance group. The presentation ceremony, closing ceremony and banquet were held in the motel’s dining room.

Flying site

The competition venue in the hills around Turda offered countless choices of suitable slopes and launch sites for all possible wind directions. These opportunities were ideally utilised by the organiser. The competition manager employed a great deal of expertise to take into account the varying and quickly changing weather and wind directions and thus ensured fair and correct conditions for the competition. His decisions were logical and proved to be sensible and far-sighted throughout the events.

Competition

The World Championships were suitably combined with two FAI World Cup Events: The first “Turda-Cup” prior to the World Championships also served as a welcome training opportunity and prologue competition for competitors and also as a final opportunity for the organiser to make sure everything would run smoothly. The second World Cup event – held after the World Championships – provided less successful competitors with another chance. Overall, such a combination of World Championships and FAI World Cup events enables infrastructure costs to be spread more widely. The F1E World Championships in Turda have set an excellent example.

Conclusions

Finally I would like to thank the Model Flight Association of Romania for organising these wonderful World Championships. The close connection of topography, wind direction and wind speed require organisers of F1E events to demonstrate a large degree of flexibility. This was mastered excellently.
