SCAT Annual Report, Lost Hills, March 14-15, 2015
Sanction #500
Contest Directors; Jim Parker and Lee Hines
As the Fab Feb contests continue to grow, it casts a shadow on the next FAI FF contest at Lost Hills, the SCAT Annual. This year we returned to the 4 weeks after the MaxMen date thinking the extra week we had tried for the last 2 years did not have significant effect on the participation at the SCAT Annual but the weather is generally better earlier. However we failed to properly coordinate and we were in conflict with the Taibi contest in Perris. We’ll do better job of coordinating in 2016. This hurt attendance a bit but still we had 39 entrants and 16 events were flown, both FAI and AMA.
The weather more than cooperated; the previous week’s rain kept the green ground cover green but the ground was sufficiently dry not to cause any problem. I had envisions a new flying area 1500 feet north on the Cashin / Holloway property line to provide more distance from the pistachio trees when the breeze is from the NE-NW. On Friday morning I blazed a new road in the RV to the new location, making 10 passes or so and erected a green flag to identify the location. I did my testing flying there until about 2:00 pm. I had advertised this plan in SEN but had only two visitors but no one came to test fly with me. My testing had model drifting in all directions until noon, and not far. The weather forecast for Saturday was to be the same. Sometimes great solutions are developed for problems that don’t exist at that time. I decided to start the contest on the main field. This turned out to be the right call, we did not have to move even for the F1A 11 minute flyoff flight. Perhaps the new location will be of use in the future.
Saturday: F1A, B and Q started off in great style. In F1A, the first 2 rounds had all maxes less Wade “Ghost Town” VanNest had an early DT— he had a talk with his factory support team about that. F1B had the same story with just one 9 second drop in the first two rounds. Conditions generally were good with amble lift but some foolery conditions caught a few. At the end of the 7 round rounds, F1A had 6 clean and F1B had 4 clean.
Three F1B flyers prepped for the 7 minute flight. I believe Aimee Raymond launch first only a minute or two into the round. Her launch was too straight, the model rolled out not losing much altitude but it was the difference. Blake Jensen launched seconds after Aimee and was 10-15 meters higher than her at prop fold. Bill Booth waited until the end of the round but was not rewarded with better air. In the end, Blake won by 15 seconds, the higher climb making the winning difference.
It is always exciting in the last flight, the F1A guys going for an 11 minute flight. Shlomi Rosenweig launched his new median span hybrid airfoil glider in the first minute thinking the air was on the decline. Brian VanNest launched into solid air about 8 minutes into the 10 minute round flying his short LDA—a bit to the right but still high. Rene Limberger went upwind (perhaps because he did not have a flasher?) and made a great launch with his LDA which all enjoyed watching sail over head for the winning flight.
In F1Q, Matt Gewain and Mike Pykelny slugged it out, both flyers dropping some flights. Matt won by 27 seconds.
“Doc” Glenn Schneider was the only F1P flyer, maxed out and flew some other AMA events as well.
Sunday: “Doc” was the only F1J flyer. We appreciate Glenn coming out and flying— the F1J trophy had not been competed for in 2013 and 2014. The F1J perpetual trophy now as a home for 2015.
F1H had 6 entrants and so an AmCup bonus point on the line. This had not happen for some time at Lost Hills. Only 3 flights were dropped out of the regular 30 flights. Brian VanNest had the morning tie breaker high time and was on the hot seat. Four flew the 3 minute flyoff. Amazingly during this mid-afternoon flight, only Brian maxed! Shlomi did 121 second beating “rookie” Blake Jensen by 1 sec. I dragged my sorry 48 second flight time off the field to commensurate with Mike McKeever and Kyle Jones who did not make the flyoff.
In F1G, Mike Pykelny had the morning tie breaker high time and was on the hot seat. Mike Richardson had second high time followed by Paul Masterman. Paul dropped the second round (96 seconds) and finished with all maxes. Mike and Mike exchanged maxes through the fourth round. Mike P dropped the fifth. Now Mike R just needed to make 97 second for the win— he maxed!
As often, the morning tiebreaker scores were not needed to determine the winner.
As not often, the FAI events finished before the AMA events. Soon 4:00 AMA event end time came and awards were given out. Blake, Charlie and Kyle Jones and I were soon the only ones on the field. At 5pm the breeze came up. Having my Mongolian World Champ teammate / runner and green ground covering I used the opportunity to practice with my newest model in 6-9 mph wing. Charlie chased for me.
The next morning found me solo at Lost Hills in another perfect day of flying. My self launcher got a work out until leaving at 2:00 pm. What a weekend of free flight.

Proposal for standards-based timing technology for FAI Freeflight.
From Rene Limberger
We are seeking input on a proposal to introduce technology to solve the problem of timekeeping in FAI Freeflight.
At this time, anyone in the firelight community is invited to comment and ask questions on this draft.
F1C flappers
From: gil morris
Regarding Aram’s note about CIAM, who in the world says flaps are not advantageous in F1C? Flaps eliminate pitching moment in the climb that provides more altitude and a more controllable climb. Nothing else short of a symmetrical airfoil of a folder compares to a true flapper. Do these people know what they are saying?
Re Banning Flaps SEN 1984
A the end of Aram’s piece on the current proposals to ban flaps, he remarks
that “a no flaps clause was sneaked into F1Q a few years ago”. There was
no sneaking – the bans on variable area and flaps were the subject of
proposals by Germany in 2010. They were published on the agenda and just as
visible as the current proposals which Aram has seen.
