Wilbur & Orville plus the Skyscraper’s Annual

Over August 29-30 weekend we held a pair of American Cup contests at Wawayanda NY. The Sunday contest was the postponed June Skyscraper’s Annual that was partially rained out. Having two back to back contests dictated using a double 5-round format with extended maxes on the first and fifth rounds. (The standard FAI contest format beginning in 2116.) The weather cooperated and a light wind blew up the length of the field from the south west on both days. Three Canadians – Tony Mathews, Ladi Horak and Jama Danier drove down from Toronto. This is Jama’s second visit to the field which he says is more turbulent than other sites. By Sunday he figure out his glide’s trim.

By the fifth round on both days the thermals were enormous. On Saturday, Tony’s model took 9 minutes to descend, landing on a large tree overhanging the Wallkill River that runs along the field’s east boundary. It required the services of our tree climber on Sunday, which is why Tony quit flying. I had three flights off the field to the north and in one case the model landed in the midst of a dense clump of trees. Eventually it was found eventually using the Andriukov beeping feature.

On Saturday we waited until 7 PM to hold the B flyoff in rather negative air. No flyoff was required on Sunday since those who maxed the first round later dropped. The four Q fliers had a short day on Sunday flying F1S with compressed rounds. AMA events were flown on Sunday.

Fernando Zito – F1C Flyer from Argentina

Message from Claudia Zito via Lee Hines

Hello Lee!

I´m Claudia, Mauricio´s daughter. I wonder if you remember me, as well as I do for you. For several years I read your papers about free flight.
Don´t know if you heard the news, some bad news. My brother Fernando died last 23 June.
We are all deeply sad. He was only 44, and I think he was supposed to be one of the winners of the World Cup in F1C.
Dad is trying to keep on modelling, for hard that is now, in spite of the fact that them both were a genuine team.

It is important for me to make this news public because he had so many friends all around the world.

My best regards

Claudia Zito
