Not about Bern but Sporting Code
From: Leslie Farkas
Since the published letter of Frederic in SEN 2362, we received a number of comments from other competitors. I will not comment on the Bern contest because I was not there, therefore I do not qualify to agree or disagree with the organizer’s decisions.
Many of the people, who expressed their opinion, missed the point what Frederic want it to bring to the attention of Ian and the modeling community. We are clearly facing some serious problems because individual’s interpretation or disregard of (some) of the sporting code. The problem is going back many years ago when we started to change the wordings of the rules. About ten years ago, when I was active in the Free Flight Subcommittee, I wrote to Ian that some of those changes allowed for interpretations and “Sportsman will have to go to contests with a lawyer who can represent them in certain situations”. Bogdan’s comments in SEN 2371 confirms exactly what I am talking about. Ian and the FF Subcommittee have an important task, which is to make the rules clear, Black and White and CIAM to enforce those for organizers and competitors. Organizers who fail to comply with the sporting code should face disciplinary action from CIAM. This should apply to Continental and World Championships as well. We need a strong leadership and rules which are to be followed, so we can enjoy our sport to the fullest.
We all understand the difficulties which organizers and contest directors can face but the objective is not just to collect a large amount of entry fees but provide a fair and well run competition.
I was happy to read Ian’s reply to Frederic’s letter. To eliminate any misunderstanding, in my view Frederic did not blame Ian but simply expressed his expectations for the involvement of the Chairman of our sport when changes contrary to the sporting code are made in a competition. We all recognize that Ian is doing a good job and we are thankful for his contribution to aeromodelling.
