The cat walks around the elephant in the corner
From:Martin Dilly

Leslie and Ron both make good points regarding the organization of contests and the problem of fly-offs, but together with most of the others who have expressed opinions, all seem to be pussy-footing round what is surely the real problem. Today’s models, flown the way they currently are, have far too much performance to be flown on most of the sites available to us. This, surely, is the main reason that DT fly-offs are sometimes resorted to, to nobody’s satisfaction.
At the risk of repeating myself, should we not now be urgently looking at means of reducing the height these models reach before the glide starts? Doing this without making existing airframes obsolete is important, but surely not beyond the combined brainpower of the free-flight community.
Martin Dilly, 24 times British team manager, F1A flyer till too clapped-out to continue a few years ago, but still capable of rational thought.

Euro Champs Observation
From:Michael Achterberg
Euro Champs. Congratulations to Albert Bulatov on winning in F1b. Also, interesting to see that they flew 7 rounds. Only 20 flyers out of 75 in F1b maxed out. Good thing it wasn’t 5 round contest, as there were 23 missed maxes in the last in the last 2 rounds. Once again this points out one of the best ways to cut down on huge flyoff numbers and how important it is to fly 7 round contests. Why we ever went to 5 rounds have never understood. Maybe we should rethink that one???

Electronic Approvals
At the recent CIAM meeting a Free Flight rules change was approved to use Altimeters as timing devises/help under certain circumstances. This was passed but the CIAM president asked why we (the FF community) had not gone to the CIAM EDIC Working Group for advice/approval. This group approves electronic “rules enforcing” devices for other aeromodelling disciplines e.g F5 altitude limited soaring. It is my understanding that in the future any electronic devices used in Free Flight Competition for official time of flights or motor runs would need to be approved by this group. This would not affect electronic timers or tracking devices that were not involved in providing direct input to the official scoring/time keeping.
I understand that the FFTSC has subsequently had a positive interaction with this group.
