The 2019 FAI Southwest Regionals Model Airplane Championships
The first America’s Cup contest of 2019, the FAI SWR, was held on January 19 and 20 in Eloy, Arizona.
The weather and wind direction were not the usual with a disturbance flowing in from the N with some clouds but also some blue skies. The field was slightly damp from some rain a few days before which kept the dust down a bit. The temperature in the mornings was 41°F (5°C) but then warmed up to about 71°F (21°C). The winds were about 9 mph (4 m/s) out of the N during the 5 rounds and increased to 12 mph (5.4 m/s) at the fly-off Saturday. On Sunday the wind was out the SSE at 3 to 6mph (1.3-2.7 m/s) earlier and changed to NNW at 4mph (1.8 m/s) for the fly-off.
We had 32 sportsmen flying the 8 FAI events. The contestants were from AZ, CA, CO, MI, NV, OH, OR, TX and UT. We again had Mike Woodhouse flying in from the U.K. and Tomer Obligenarz from Israel. Enes and Jasminka Pecenkovic flew for their home country of Bosnia-Herzegovina. We had 5 ladies flying FAI events, Julie Parker (F1S), Tiffaney O’Dell (F1G), Geralyn Jones (F1G), Jasminka Pecenkovic (F1A) and Noa Goldstein (F1A) who is a FAI Junior.
On Saturday F1Q was won with a max-out by Tom Ioerger with Jack Murphy in 2nd and Ben Tarcher in 3rd place. Combined F1C/P had only 2 entries with Faust Parker (F1C) beating Mike Fedor (F1P) who dropped the 5th round. F1A had 12 flying. After 5 rounds there were 6 maxed out. Only 2 made the 5 minutes fly-off in the windy air. Jim Parker and Jim Farmer then both made the 7-minute flight. But then in the 3rd F1A fly-off round Jim Parker won 1st place, with Jim Farmer in 2nd and Shlomi Rosenzweig in 3rd place. Noa Goldstein, a Junior, deserves a mention for circle-towing in the windy conditions, maxing out the 5 rounds and finishing in 4th place in F1A. F1B had 9 flyers, 6 were clean after 5 rounds. Charlie Jones won F1B by maxing all 3 fly-off flights, Jerry Fitch was 2nd and Walt Ghio 3rd.
On Sunday we flew F1G, F1H, F1J and F1S in 5 rounds. F1G had 9 flyers with 3 in the fly-off. Peter Brocks won the F1G Bear trophy by flying 3 seconds longer in the 2nd fly-off flight than Mike Richardson in 2nd and Geralyn Jones in 3rd place. In F1H we had 6 participants. Here Jim Parker won the F1H Bear in the 3rd fly-off round with Ken Bauer coming in 2nd and Brian Van Nest then in 3rd place. 3 participated in F1J. Both Faust Parker and Mike Fedor maxed out. Faust maxed in the fly-off which gave him the F1J Bear with Mike then in 2nd place. Glenn Schneider was 3rd in F1J. In F1S, the small electric event, we had 7 flying and 4 maxed out the 5 rounds. The F1S fly-off went just for one round trying to make 2 minutes on a 5 second motor run. George Morris was the only one making the 2 minutes to win the F1S Bear trophy. Julie Parker was 2nd and Robert Donnelly 3rd.
A big thank you to all participants and to Mike Fruciano, Tom Gaylor, Tom Ioerger and my wife Brigitte who all made this contest a memorable event.
