The 2020 FAI Southwest Regionals Model Airplane Championships
The first America’s Cup contest of 2020, the FAI SWR, was held on January 18 and 19 in Eloy, Arizona.
The weather was nearly perfect, just a few clouds but also all blue skies. The temperature in the mornings was 33°F (1°C) but then warmed up to about 72°F (22°C) both days. The wind started out at 9 mph (4 m/s) out of the SSE during the first 2 rounds and then changed to 6 mph (2.7 m/s) or less out of the NNW later on Saturday. For the fly-offs later that day the wind increased again to 10 mph (4.5 m/s) out of the N. On Sunday the wind was out the SSE at 3 to 6mph (1.3-2.7 m/s) earlier and changed to NNW at 8 mph (3.6 m/s) for the fly-offs.
We had 36 sportsmen flying in the 8 FAI events. The contestants were from AZ, CA, CO, MI, NV, OR, TX, UT and VA. We again had Mike Woodhouse flying in from the U.K. We had 5 ladies flying FAI events, Julie Parker (F1S), Tiffaney O’Dell (F1B, F1G), Jasminka Pecenkovic (F1A) and also Adelaide Ulm (F1A) and Skylar Donnelly (F1B) who are FAI Juniors. They will both be on the USA Team for the Junior World Championships in Romania in August of this year.
On Saturday F1Q was won with a max-out by Tom Ioerger with Jack Murphy in 2nd place. Combined F1C/P had only 2 entries with Faust Parker (F1C) beating Mike Fedor (F1P). F1A had 12 flying. After 5 rounds there were 5 maxed out. Only 3 made the 6-minute fly-off. Jim Parker, Enes Pecenkovic and Jim Farmer then attempted the 8-minute flight in which Jim Farmer dropped out. But then in the 3rd F1A fly-off round Jim Parker won 1st place, with Enes Pecencovic in 2nd and Jim Farmer in 3rd place. Adelaide Ulm, a Junior, dropped only 5 seconds in the 5 rounds for a respectable 6th place. F1B had 10 flyers, 6 were clean after 5 rounds. Tiffaney O’Dell won F1B by being the only one maxing the 6-minute fly-off round, Blake Jensen was 2nd and Jerry Fitch 3rd.
On Sunday we flew F1G, F1H, F1J and F1S in 5 rounds. F1G had 9 flyers with 3 in the fly-off. Tiffaney won the F1G Bear trophy by maxing the fly-off with Walt Ghio in 2nd and Jerry Fitch in 3rd place. In F1H we had 4 participants. Here Blake Jensen won the F1H Bear in the 4th fly-off round with Brian Van Nest coming in 2nd and Ken Bauer then in 3rd place. 5 participated in F1J. Only Guy Mennano and Mike Fedor maxed out. Guy won the 2nd fly-off which gave him the F1J Bear with Mike then in 2nd place. Glenn Schneider was 3rd in F1J. In F1S, the small electric event, we had 8 flying and 6 maxed out in the 5 rounds. The F1S fly-off went just for one round trying to make 2 minutes on a 5 second motor run. Clint Brooks was the only one making the 2 minutes to win the F1S Bear trophy. George Morris was 2nd and Charlie Morris 3rd.
A big thank you to all participants and to Rich Lyon and my wife Brigitte who all made this contest a memorable event.
