Nelson Glow Plugs
Last year the price for the Nelson glow plugs was increased due to the increased cost for the helical filament wire that is used in the glow plug. The manufacture has again raised the cost for the glow plugs. The new price is $9.50 for each plug. I have glow plugs in stock.

They say that good weather is the key to a great contest. This year’s Sierra Cup was flown in excellent weather. The temperatures were high, approaching 100 degrees, but the winds were relatively calm and predictable. We were able to fly from the “road line” for all events except F1E.
Peter Brocks ran the F1E contest and has previously reported the results, which were pretty good for me. It was great to chase some models again after my health issues since January. It appears I’ve turned the corner on some of my issues and was up to the task of running Sierra Cup followed by the United States FAI Team Selection Finals. I’ll provide further results of the Finals with scores soon.
The Mini events followed F1E on Thursday October 8. With the Endless October including a week of FAI Finals, attendance was down slightly from previous years. There were only one flyer each in F1H and F1J although the winners of those events did max out. F1G had more contestants than any other mini event and Jerry Fitch won this year. F1S was slightly less popular and won by Jack Murphy with the only max out.
The “Big” events were flown on Saturday. During the entire week the same weather pattern repeated itself each day. Initial calm started round one with a steady rise in wind through round two up to seven miles per hour. The wind then abated to light and variable through the regular rounds before rising to the breeziest part of the day when our first fly o?s were held just after 4 PM. By the time of the second fly o? round the wind (and thermal activity) died and the events were decided in the second fly o?.
In F1A only Jim Parker, Ken Bauer and Guy Goldstein maxed out in a field of 17 flyers. It was great to see the Spanish contingent of Javier Abad, Miguel Monedero, and Kimmo Kulmakko (now flying under a Spanish FAI license). Javier would go on to be the only max out in the Kotuku Cup the following day. Ken Bauer dropped the first fly o? leaving Jim and Guy to sort it out for the win. Jim scored 400 seconds to Guys 343 seconds to win the event in the eight minute fly o? round.
In F1B there were more max outs but the event would also be decided in the eight minute fly o?. Ten maxed through the regular rounds. Three were dropped in the six minute fly o? leaving seven to contest the win. Sevak Malkhasyan seems to have a handle on what it takes to win in Lost Hills with a 353 second win in the final fly o? with Ladi Horak taking second by two seconds over Bill Booth. Did I mention the trees? Well you can climb the almond trees as they are now dead and in the process of being removed as there is not enough water in the valley to grow them. That said during the Sierra Cup only one model overflew the trees and that was Mike Richardson’s coupe that never DT’d and is potentially still flying or probably landed in a vacant field outside Fresno.
F1C saw three participants compete with Guy Menanno taking the win as Faust Parker did not fly in a fly o? due to an illness that left Julie Parker needing some rest back as the hotel. Je? Ellington flew 4 rounds for third place.
F1Q did not have a max out from any of the five flyers. Mike Richardson had the contest won but a power stall and near crash saved by a DT brought his hopes to an end. David Seacrist, someone who had not visited Lost Hills for years, won the event with Jack Murphy and Ben Tarcher finishing behind him.

Dusty Finals
Aram Schlosberg
Back in New York after the Finals. The lines are not crazy tight and flying is over lush green sod, framed by irrigation canals and a wall of corn to the west.
.
Lost Hills was extremely dusty and dust got into everything. A tarp on the ground kept it in bay for about an hour. They have not had rain for two years. Hopefully, it will rain between now and the Maxmen contests in February.
.
Meager or no rain – it would be great if the organizers contracted a water truck to douse the main flight lines before the February contests.
.
Another suggestion is to stop retrieval motorcycles chase models before the last model lands in flyoffs. They kick up a cloud of dust, obscuring models still in the air. ///
