Hank Cole
A few days ago the well known flyer Hank Cole passed away. Hank was not only a fabulous model flyer but worked as NASA in the Apollo and other programs. We have information on this but it is not in form that can be easily published yet. We are working on it. Besides notable achievements in our model flying world as well in space we publish below something from Peter Brocks that talks about why we all liked him so much.

Hank Cole

From: Peter Brocks

I am sad that Hank passed away. He was one of the nicest, friendliest fliers I know. He was a good person to be around, to explain his inventions and to discuss the science of aeromodelling. He always liked talking about Pfenninger strips.
He became my freeflight hero when in 1956 the German Flugmodelbau magazine had Hank with his Webra 1.5cc Diesel powered flapper on the title page with the 3-view inside.
More than 20 years ago I was flying Coupe with Hank at Lost Hills and Tangent. He was working on his 4 and then 5-minute Coupe. The wings had plenty of 0.7mm dia. carbon rod diagonals. I remember taking apart a Gorban F1G variable pitch front end so he could make sketches to then build his own version. At a Tangent Classic on the day that Hank had his 80th birthday he had a F1G fly-off with Bob White. We were rooting for Hank to win and celebrate his birthday. His model was flying really well, but then Bob’s model caught a small thermal over the outhouse and won.
I like that Hank wrote “to my flying buddy” in his great book “the Fascination of Flight” and put a photo of him and me in there. I miss flying with Hank.

The 2023 FAI Southwest Regionals Model Airplane Championships

The first America’s Cup contest of 2023, the FAI SWR, was held on Saturday, January 14 at Eloy, Arizona.

Weeks before the SWR the weather forecast showed some a possibility of precipitation. Friday before the contest was perfect for test flying, blue skies, 75°F (24°C). But then the clouds were rolling in, and the forecast was for likely showers, rain and strong winds for Sunday and Monday. I made the decision to fly all FAI events on Saturday, Jan. 14, and to make each of the 5 rounds 1.5 hours long to give contestants time to fly more than one event.

Saturday was a bit windy (7mph/3m/s) in the morning with a wind out of SSE. Later the wind direction was variable and often not more than 0mph with a temperature of up to 64°F (18°C) when the sun came through the clouds.
We had 28 competitors flying in the 8 FAI events. The contestants were from AZ, CA, CO, OH, OK, OR, PA, TX, and UT. Mike Woodhouse flew again in from Merry Old England to fly F1B. We had 5 ladies flying FAI events, Julie Parker (F1Q, F1S), Janna Van Nest (F1S), Lynn Edmondson (F1S), Tiffaney O’Dell (F1G) and Jasminka Pecenkovic (F1A).

At 3:30pm the 5th round was over and for 3 events no fly-offs were required. In F1C/P Guy Menanno won by maxing out with his F1C folder. Mike Fedor was 2nd and Bob Hanford was 3rd, both flying F1P models. In F1J Faust Parker maxed out and won the Bear with Mike Fedor in 2nd place. In F1H Blake Jensen maxed out and won the F1H Bear, with Jim Parker in 2nd place and Mike Fedor in 3rd. In F1A we had a fly-off with 6 fliers trying to make 6 minutes, two made that time. In this second fly-off Enes Pecenkovic won with over 5 minutes. Andrew Barron was 2nd in F1A when his flapper stalled badly. Risto Puhakka flew well in the first F1A fly-off and was 3rd overall. In F1B there were 7 fliers in the 6-minute fly-off. Four made it into the second fly-off, which Jerry Fitch won with over 7 minutes, Charlie Jones was 2nd and Walt Ghio was 3rd. The F1Q fly-off was won by Julie Parker, with Jack Murphy in 2nd place. F1G had 3 fliers in the fly-off with Jerry Fitch winning the Bear, Tiffaney O’Dell in 2nd and Geralyn Jones in 3rd place. In the small electric event F1S there were 6 clean from the initial 13 fliers. It took 2 fly-offs with 5-second motor run to find the winner of the F1S Bear, who was George Morris, 2nd place went to Charlie Morris and 3rd to Frank Menanno.
A big thank you to all participants and to Mike Fruciano and my wife Brigitte who all made this contest a memorable event.
